In a similar way to how despite the difference between a Navajo and Lenape the American Indian Movement uses the unifier of being Native American in the face of their minority status.

The difference is, as far as I know the AIM isn't a racial hate movement. The average member of the movement would probably say "we didn't want to all be classified as one giant blob known as 'indians' but Europeans put us in this category and this has affected us ever since." The NOI believes in biological racism and doesn't care about the differences between different African groups, or even more laughably about the differences between Botswanans and Mexicans.
