Niger might have something to say about that.

Better suggestion:

SPLIT IT.

The north belongs to the Touareg, the south to the Malinké. Kindly ask the south to give full independence to the north? It's not like that border (rawn with a colonial ruler no less) has any ethno-linguistic or historic value.

With the north gone, the south can focus on restoring civilian law.

The north can do as it pleases. Institute a council of Marabouts, if they want.

That's one of those things that sounds better in theory than it likely would be in practice.

1) Where, precisely do you plan on drawing the proposed border?

2) How do plan on resolving the fact that there have been multiple northern rebel groups with very different ideological goals and very different territorial claims?

3) Having hived off the Tuareg (and possibly other northerners?) in Mali, what do you plan on doing with the Tuareg in northern Niger and southern Algeria? Leave them where they are, or join them to your new northern Mali?

4) Having set this precedent, which other African countries do you propose in your wisdom to divide on ethno-linguistic lines?

5) Without in any way underplaying the fact that the current boundaries are a legacy of European colonial empires, why ignore that northern and southern Mali have previously formed part of long-lasting and historically significant states? Notably - and slightly ironically in context - the Empire of Mali (as an aside, the brief 1959-1960 Mali Federation - which included both modern Mali and Senegal - would have functionally recreated Mansa Musa's state).

No. No. No!

I’m part Tuareg but I don’t think they should just split from Mali. Additionally, loads of non-Tuaregs from southern Mali and from neighboring countries cross into Northern Mali to trade and last time Azawad existed the Tuareg weren’t exactly too nice to them.

Also, no, f*ck marabouts.

It's far too late to be redrawing the borders of African countries along ethic/cultural lines. The best time to have done this was during the decolonisation era, and even then it would have been a fantastically terrible idea. The best thing to do now is work with the mess that the Europeans left us.

The new guy in power is the old Vice-President, Assimi Goita

Mali's transitional vice president Assimi Goita said Tuesday that he removed the transitional president and prime minister from office, confirming reports from several international groups that the leaders had been ousted on Monday.

Goita -- who also led last year's coup -- said that President Bah N'Daw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and several of their advisors had been removed from office because they had failed to consult him on a cabinet reshuffle, according to a statement read by Goita's adviser, Baba Cissé, on national broadcaster ORTM Tuesday.
A senior diplomatic source told CNN that two key actors in the putsch, Colonels Sadio Camara and Modibo Koné, had not been included in the new government that was announced on Monday, adding that that may have been a key reason for the decision to trigger a coup.
The current whereabouts of the president and prime minister are unclear, and CNN has not been able to reach N'Daw, Ouane, or their representatives for comment.

Not to mention the AU would most likely oppose it and would create a lot of friction elsewhere in Africa. While the borders of many African states don't make total sense in terms of ethnic distribution, the history of ethnic based civil wars and rebellions makes secessionism a very unpopular thing among African states. It took a long time to get South Sudan to become independent.

Also I don't get why people bring up the ethnic divisions between African states as a criticism, or at least the ones who usually do since it tends to often come from people who are against ethnonationalism. What gives?
