Sadly those things are happening more and more often :(

Hatred feeds hatred, especially when politicians are so eager to throw oil on the fire for purely electoral reasons.

And a very degraded social and economical context doesn't help. Hate crimes of all kind (against Jews, Muslims, Blacks, Tsiganes, LGBT, ...) are on the raise since decades, it's really a scary situation.

I don't think the risk of a "hard" military dictatorship, like Pinochet like like Myammar, is real.

But a constant, slow but steady, erosion of individual and political freedom, increase of police brutality, and oppression of minorities, yes, that's already happening and I fear it'll only get worse in the next few years.

In 2017 she lost 33% against 66% for Macron, that's not a "narrow margin". But that won't happen again.

The saddest part is that the far-right will be the CAUSE of radicalization. Make Muslims feel like second class citizens, unwelcome, isolated, they become an insular community. And people are rightfully angry and then Islamist propagandists and recruiters take advantage.

The blood of the next terror attack to hit France will be on the hands of people like Marie Le Pen and her fascist supporters.

Considering that there are laws that discriminate against religions other than Islam, and that just a few days ago a women was gunned down for refusing to marry someone, and a boy was freed from prison despite stabbing his sister to death for showing her face online, it really doesn’t matter who I talk to.

France might have been one of the left-wing country on economical issues for a while, especially when the PCF was at or above 20% and the CGT had the ability to paralyze the whole country at will. But sadly those days are gone, and France never been that left-wing on social issues.

Indeed, that's what I've been saying for years. The haters of both sides, the far-right that hates Muslims and the islamists who hate non-Muslims both feed each other in a spiral of violence. The politicians throwing oil on the fire for electoral gains and the media who love sensatianolism and fear-mongering because it attracts clicks/views have their share of responsibility in the disaster, too.

The army and the police in France have long been supporting the far right, that's nothing new. Post-elections studies show they supported Le Pen massively. Although that they dare to say it so openly is new and worrying.

Financially left-wing, but in most other respects it's fairly reactionary. Having a Le Pen in 3rd or 2nd place has been all too common in elections.

This isn't particuarly related to the above point but I keep being surprised with how gun-happy the French authorities are. Their transport police walk around with full length rifles whereas in the UK you might perhaps see an MP5 if it was somewhere really important like Healthrow.

We have a strong far-right since the 80s yeah. But it's a bit more complicated - a majority of the population supports things like LGBT rights, decriminalization of cannabis, right to end your life in dignity when sick, ... but we do have a majority of the population, especially those days, that is hostile to immigration, favors a more punitive approach of justice and support anti-Muslism laws. So it's more of a mixed bag in general than "fairly reactionary", but on immigration-related issues, it is :(

France has had an interesting relationship with its cultural/nationalistic identity for decades. Playing amateur psychiatrist I'd say France had something to prove and thus went on a different path than Britain after the Suez Crisis; Britain could make movies about the Battle of Britain while quietly accepting the loss of the empire, whereas for France Austerlitz was long ago and thus in an increasingly anglophone world fought tooth and nail for Algeria and Indochina. In more modern times adverts on French TV have to have a certain amount of French in them lest the French kids become too anglicized. France is also significantly behind having English as a second language compared to Germany and Scandinavia. In short, France has become accustomed to fighting for its culture and thus it's not too much of a change to apply it to islamic immigration.

Napoleon's tomb was like that when I went about two years ago, although the baggage check was extremely cursory. It makes me wonder if that's a sign of racial profiling.

I've repeatedly seen police with M4s at my local train station. And it's not even a major hub.

And airport police generally have G36s when I've seen them.
