Under inexpert management, the canal project to divert water flowing to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to Afghan irrigation could also cause severe salinization and ecological damage in all three countries. While there are legitimate reasons to pursue the construction of the canal, the limited foreign investments and government revenue further call into question whether this is a realistic project.
