Assad himself is a Muslim, the Syrian army is Muslim, the Iranian army is Muslim, the FSA is a secular western-backed organization.

Assad is an Ālawi (I have no intention to takfir them) ruling over a largely Sunni population. He is supported by Russia, a state known for suppressing its Muslim minorities. In additions to detaining his critics, Assad has engaged in gas attacks against his own citizens.

You do not support people just because they utter the Shahada if they’re doing so while kicking an old woman in the ribs.

In Chechnya, the Russians were fighting to conquer an Islamic Republic that had been independent since 1996 and that had implemented sharia in 1999. It makes no sense to believe the US or USSR was murdering Muslims or fighting Islam by trying to bolster local Islamic governments while not believing that Russia was murdering Muslims and fighting Islam by trying to outright conquer a de facto independent state with Islamic institutions and a large Muslim majority.

As for Syria, Assad himself is a Muslim, the Syrian army is Muslim, the Iranian army is Muslim, the FSA is a secular western-backed organization.

2. The FSA isn't secular at present and hasn't been since the earliest days of the Syrian Civil War. In fact, the Muslim Brotherhood had fairly significant influence among certain constituent forces by 2014 and local Islamic groups began to dominate it around the same time.

Xinjang is another issue, and I agree with you that the Chinese government is harassing Muslims because of their culture/religion, which is unfortunate.

Terrorism Analyst Bill Roggio Speaks About the NRF in CBS Interview

In his remarks about the National Resistance Front, Roggio noted that they were doing the majority of the anti-Taliban fighting in Afghanistan. He said they are present in Panjshir, Takbir and Baghlan, and perhaps Parwan and Kapisa as well. He said that while this was interesting, it’s quite unsurprising to anyone who’s studied Afghanistan for years. Roggio noted that the US State Department condemned any support for armed anti-Taliban resistance & asserted it is unlikely that the CIA was supporting the NRF; rather, he claimed, Tajikistan and India were more likely to lend it support in some way. He further claimed that for the US, supporting a resistance movement in Afghanistan would be an admission that the US was wrong to leave how and when it did and failed it’s mission in the country. Mockingly, he and his interviewer reference the fact that the US had called for the NRF to negotiate with the Taliban (“because negotiations, Michael, works so well with the Taliban…We should trust them to negotiate in good faith with a nascent resistance group who the Taliban absolutely hate.”)
