Afghan Conflict: Russian Political Leader Meets With Massoud

Postby Insaanistan » Tue May 04, 2021 7:55 pm

Meaning “students” in Arabic, the nationalist terrorist group known as the Taliban was inadvertently formed by the United States as part of the fight against Communism in Afghanistan. With them, al-Qaeda and ISIS on one side and the US and Afghanistan’s military on the other, the civil war has torn up the Central Asian country, destroying countless lives.

The US promised to withdraw under the Trump Administration amid talks between the Afghan Government and the Taliban in Qatar, with some Taliban reps being invited to Camp David. Biden has made the same promise. After the missed US deadline to withdraw troops placed by Trump passed, the armed group has committed over 140 attacks. The US states this will not speed up their withdrawal, despite Taliban threats of even more attacks if US troops don’t pull out.

Afghans are divided and conflicted on the issue of US withdrawal. On the one hand, they want this foreign occupation force gone from their land. On the other, there’s a fear of the US does leave, incidents like these will increase in intensity and frequency, and the military will be unable to combat it.

Yeah, that's the main problem looming over Afghanistan. While I want the US to withdraw and finally get out, these security threats with the Taliban are what's going to be the main obstacle to any long-term peace to the region.

Afghanistan faces an uncertain future... While it is good that our troops our returning home from this horrible war. I worry that the Afghan people will suffer at the hands of the Taliban. Hopefully once we withdraw from the region the Afhgan military can deal with the Taliban by themselves without U.S. support.

That Afghan government will probably last at most 2 years after the coalition leaves.

Unlikely given their performance and that they have lost two districts this year so far and have abandoned close to 200 outposts and checkpoints. Attacks in Kabul are also increasing, targeting key civic sectors especially, such as the judicial system.

Why not attack? The U.S. is leaving no matter how bad the attacks get and it makes them look strong.

This, they are going to take over. The real question is what, if anything, is anyone going to do if they start acting as a base for more terrorist attacks.

That's a real good question. It is doubtful that anyone will want to invade again and it is extremely laughable to believe that the Taliban will keep their word on not letting Afghanistan once again become a haven for global Islamic terrorist organizations.

I'm getting real big South Vietnam vibes from this. But at the same time, the fact we've been here so long and not accomplished our goals should be telling in and of itself. I think a pullout has to be done for the sake of ending the war

They may also turn on each other like it happened before after the soviets withdrew and the communist Najibullah govt imploded and the various mujahedin groups duked it out with each other and destroyed kabul in the process.

Yeah, I remember reading an article a few years ago about interfactional disputes and skirmishes becoming increasing common in the Taliban, so it is possible.

They need to withdraw, the US has it's own problems to worry about, and needs to stop meddling in the affairs of other nations. If we stay there, the Taliban won't stop the attacks. If we leave, they likely still won't stop.

Tbh, this will be an incredibly normal status quo irrespective of the scale of blooshed that will happen in the future. I mean, 5 million people died during the horrific late 1990s-early 2000s Congo wars, yet literally nobody cared. For many decades, "who cares lol" has been a pretty standard and internationally acceptable answer for global powers in response to millions of horrific deaths (let alone Afghanistan, whose death toll is miniscule in comparison) in places outside of media attention, and it's not like it'll drastically change anytime soon.

The Taliban could conquer Kabul today and even that shouldn't change the equation. The Afghanistan War costs trillions that can be used for health care, education, roads, trains, research, anything.

Lots of places are in the hands of bastards, but we're not fighting warlords in DR Congo, we're not fighting in Donbass. The world keeps turning.

It's the gambler's fallacy, sunk cost fallacy. We've invested 20 years and a trillion dollars and thousands of soldiers died, we can't stop now, it can't all be for nothing. Fallacy! What's gone is gone.

Counterpoint: Big bombs go BOOM and should be dropped. Healthcare? Education? Infrastructure? What are ya, a pinko communist shill for the Soviets? No we should instead bomb people into the stone age and cause the catalyst for one of the largest migration crises' in history, and then turn around and refuse to let these people in our blessed USA because they're brown they're Muslim they're potentially terrorists, ya big doofus
