Councillor to pay substantial damages to Jeremy Corbyn for defamatory tweet

A Conservative councillor has agreed to pay “substantial” damages and legal costs to Jeremy Corbyn for a tweet containing a fake photograph of the former Labour leader at the scene of the Liverpool terrorist attack.

Paul Nickerson, a councillor on East Riding of Yorkshire Council, has apologised and taken “full responsibility” for the doctored tweet, which showed Mr Corbyn laying a poppy wreath at the burning taxi outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital, and was captioned with the word “unsurprisingly”.

Mr Nickerson said the post gave the “completely untrue impression” that the Islington North MP supports terrorist violence and said the tweet was “wrong”.

Mr Corbyn said the tweet “did a disservice to all those affected by the attack and their loved ones” and said he would use the settlement to support charities close to his heart.

Mr Nickerson, who has been suspended by his council’s Conservative group, tweeted his apology on Tuesday.

He wrote: “On 15 November 2021, a false defamatory statement, for which I accept full responsibility, was published on my Twitter account about Jeremy Corbyn MP.

“My apology is attached. I have agreed to pay substantial damages and legal costs to Mr Corbyn. Please retweet.”

Former soldier sent politician chilling tweet that he should be shot behind the ear

A military veteran has been sentenced for tweeting that a member of the Scottish Parliament should be assassinated.

Andrew Brews served in Northern Ireland and said that MSP James Dornan, who is an SNP politician for Glasgow Cathcart, “deserved one behind the ear.”

He described the politician as a “dirty little Nationalist rat.”

Brews, a landlord, admitted that the phrase was used during the Troubles to describe a method of assassination.

The former-soldier confessed he posted the message on a Twitter thread after seeing a picture of the MSP posing in front of a flag linked to the Irish Republican Army.

He has said posting the image had been a “knee-jerk reaction”.

Supporters of Mr Dornan then sent him the tweet and the MSP told the trial he had been concerned by the use of language in it.

Brews tweeted: "As I have told him, if he thinks standing posing and smiling in front of a flag belonging to a Republican proscribed organisation isn't sectarian then he's deluded.

“Just another dirty little Nationalist rat, deserves one behind the ear."

Sheriff Alison Michie told Dundee Sheriff Court: "Mr Dornan said he receives tweets like this, but nothing as concerning as this particular tweet.

"He was clear what he took it to mean and perceived that to be a threat and something that could encourage others.

Well id figure the relevance would be on him being a veteran who served in NI and making the threat at a Nationalist Politician (Even if they are Scottish) who posed with an Irish Republican Flag at an Irish Republican event. It was part of his own argument that it was a knee jerk reaction due to having served here.

'I was raped by 150 men': Young women claim grooming gang at large in Hull

One woman tells Sky News she was "sold into the sex trade" after she was first raped aged 13, with victims being threatened with weapons including a Taser and a hammer, but the culprits have not been prosecuted.

Sky News has spoken to three young women who have made serious allegations, naming their attackers, and providing documents to back up their stories. Two others have given supporting testimony.

Operation Marksman was wound down after a two-year investigation, with police telling the alleged victims they had exhausted all lines of inquiry.

But in their first TV interviews, the women at the centre of the case say they believe there was enough evidence to take it to court.

Sky News has been examining evidence provided by one young woman called Sarah (not her real name).

It includes photographs of texts from a man threatening to kill her if she does not come immediately and have sex with a number of men.

Sarah says at the age of 13 she was groomed by two men, and after two months one of them raped her.

She told Sky News: "He tried to kiss me, and I was like 'no get off', and he was like 'no, it's time for you to pay now for all the things we've given you'.

"Then he got on top of me and raped me, and I was just a powerless 13-year-old girl. Terrified."

He then took her to a block of flats.

Experts say junior members of gangs are sometimes paid to groom girls in this way.

In a spider graph Sarah later made for the police, she identifies 11 key players who came to the flat - the two groomers, the buyer and some of the regular gang members and clients.

She even numbers them and provides photos to help identify some of the men.

Oh dont mind us! Just loyalist paramilitaries threatening to murder council workers who are trying to build new social housing!

Contractors have withdrawn their services from a number of sites in Rathcoole in Newtownabbey after threats against staff, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has confirmed. It followed the appearance of graffiti targeting contractors at Monkscoole Tower on Tuesday. Some services, including health and safety work, have stopped, said NIHE.

Police said enquiries are ongoing into the incident. NIHE said it would continue to monitor the situation. "The safety of our staff and contractors is paramount, and we utterly condemn this behaviour," it said in a statement. The site where the graffiti appeared is at one of four adjacent tower blocks that are to be demolished to make way for new social housing. It has been vacant for a number of years.

PSNI Insp Bryan said a report had been received on Tuesday morning "that graffiti had been daubed on the site hoarding at some stage overnight". Antrim and Newtownabbey Mayor Billy Webb said the threats should be "withdrawn immediately". "I very much regret that contractors have been withdrawn as this will have a direct impact on local residents in Rathcoole," he said.
