Modern University teaching is in a lot of cases much too like you'd find in a school and it's probably contributing to the lack of debate and ability of people to consider an opposing argument and rationally argue against it.

On the point of holocaust denial it's not hard to disprove to anybody of a sound mind so people really shouldn't fear it at all.

Allowing a holocaust denier to waste everyone's time is not a university's job. Because that's all they would do.

It's not a "debate" or an exchange of equal ideas.

Generally it's student groups that invite external speakers in these days. I had a serious pain getting Nigel Farage cleared, and that was for a debating society.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson wants to become NI first minister

In his message to colleagues, Sir Jeffrey, currently Northern Ireland's longest serving MP, said he would contest the next assembly election - due in May 2022 - which would enable him to serve as first minister if the DUP was returned as the largest party.

"I am always willing to discuss matters that are important to you," the Lagan Valley representative wrote.

"If elected leader, I will not be leading remotely from Westminster. I will be on the ground and intend to fight the next assembly election so that I can be based here.

"I would take on the role of first minister as I believe that our people not only want a leader of unionism, they want a leader for Northern Ireland."

If Sir Jeffrey was elected as an MLA he would have to step down as an MP and a by-election would be held for his House of Commons seat.

The seat in question:

I want him to become leader just in the off chance the DUP might lose Lagan Valley in a by-election.

Speaking of elections, the results for the by-election in Airdrie & Shotts is a SNP hold, no shock, and just like in the Holyrood constituency the same cycle is pandering out.

A 2.5% swing to Labour with the SNP up a little, and the Tories and Lib Dems down. As a result Anum Qaisar-Javed is now the new SNP MP.

The sleaze and corruption stories just keep piling up though. Eventually they will start to drag the Conservative government down.

Well, the SNP quite easily held onto Airdrie and Shotts. Won 46% of the vote, beating out Labour which won 38% of the vote, a large gain from the last election.

Huge crowd of protesters surround a Home Office van to thwart an immigration raid, including one man who lay under that van for over eight hours. Turns out that when Priti Patel's goons come to take your neighbours away, you can tell them no.

From what i understand according to the Belfast Telegraph voting is currently under way in the DUP leadership contest. Should hopefully get the results soon.

No one has challenged Doug Beattie for leadership of the UUP so far so it looks like it will be an uncontested run for him.

i saw a headline about how johnson is going dirigisme and honestly i don't buy it but it could be based if he did.

imagine.

dirigisme in the UK, northern powerhouse, stronger union.

they could have done. they won't do it, of course, but they could have.
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Announcement is at 17:00 according to the BBC.

Beattie will need to work fast, the assembly election's in less than a year and if he can't turn the party's fortune's around it could be their last stand.

The man for the most part seems quite level headed and forward thinking, especially compared to a lot of Unionist Politicians.

So if he is able to rally more moderate unionists to the party they could do well. But it might be too late.

I think it will be interesting to see how he performs in debates leading up to the election.

Damn no By-election.

Well, now Northern Ireland has a creationist as the leader of its largest party. Now only to see who he will make FM when the time comes.

I reckon the DUP might get some people splitting off in the direction of the TUV to come back but for the most part i dont think its gona help them. Hope it doesnt help them any way.

Also 19-17 votes, ooh that was close.
