Given Hamas is in the process of retaliating against Israel for the assassination of a senior commander and the occupation of al-Aqsa, I wouldn't describe this as "wanton" destruction. It's a targeted strike against enemies who refuse to abide by the Geneva Conventions.

I hate to say it, but there's no point in attempting deescalation in Gaza in the absence of a peace settlement. All efforts to deescalate and all gestures of good will in the past thirty or so years have tended to lead to upticks in violence from local Palestinian militants, most notably in the case of Israel's disengagement policy. The optimum way to ensure Israeli security in the absence of a functioning peace process is to make Hamas and other militant groups wholly incapable of waging unconventional warfare by destroying all infrastructure, munitions, and arms, picking apart the command structures, and demoralizing the civilian population to such an extent that they don't have the will to fight.
