Are we going to make purely legalistic arguments regarding these matters? Because, even then, Resolution 242 is a lot less clear than some would like to admit and it has been interpreted differently by different national governments. For instance, Israel accepts Resolution 242 and acknowledges that withdrawal from territories would accompany a negotiated peace settlement, something that Ariel Sharon's offer in 2005 arguably would have satisfied.

I find it difficult to hypothesize even the most basic of solutions for this. Once again, there really are no winners here.

The only basic solution that is not just "remove everyone from the premises because they're never going to share" that I could think of is a Belgian-esque federation between Israel and Palestine, which would ensure that there would be no ethnic cleansing whatsoever.
