We lucked out in the Southwest, I guess. Dunno how you live in Michigan soberly.

The southwest can be strangely progressive at times. Still can’t believe that the states with the most female governors are both in the southwest

Won't be a country much longer if the world keeps warming.

The parameters for this survey seem biased, so it is probably fairly inaccurate.

Also,

But I would generally agree that Canada is doing better in more metrics than say, the US.

I mean, America isn't part of the British Commonwealth. Canada...I know your secret.

yeah, Canada (like many other countries) has a large history of harming indigenous people. And while Canada is quite progressive in many regards, it still has massive issues to work out

Canada, I barely know anything about it but... this list: #2 Japan

Sorry but no. This has to be one of the most biased rankings ever.

According to the authors, the rankings found in the 2021 Best Countries report were determined by a survey of more than 17,000 business- and college-educated individuals who are middle class or higher, and citizens that are “nationally representative” of their country.
There you have it.

Leaving Canada aside, the rest of the list is pretty funny.
Canada
Japan
Germany
Switzerland
Australia
United States
New Zealand
United Kingdom
Sweden
Netherlands
France
Denmark
Norway
Singapore
South Korea
Italy
China
Finland
Spain
Belgium
Austria
United Arab Emirates
Ireland
Russia
India

Especially South Korea, considering that they’ve been ranked the least happy citizens in the developed world :P

Canada I feel is certainly among the best, but probably not the best.

I feel like Denmark probably should be the best, since they’ve got a better standard of living, more of a welfare net, free paid university, they’re part of the EU and the Schengen Zone, and they do not have much urban sprawl.

I also think that New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and the Netherlands should be pretty high on the list, as should Canada. Just maybe not the top necessarily

True. But only when the Maldivians are enraged.

The Netherlands have had 10 years of unraveling social cohesion, courtesy of Mark Rutte and his cronies. The Netherlands are going the way of the USA, and that is NOT a good thing.

If this ranking factors in quality of life and social justice, then how does an overcrowded island that works people to death, dislikes foreigners, and refuses to admit that it committed war crimes get ranked #2?

1. The weather is unacceptable. It’s a miserably cold place. It snows a lot and it’s even cold without it; you could escape to Vancouver but at the cost of depression-inducing grey skies for more than half the year.
2. It’s a very inconvenient place, you have to drive everywhere to do all errands.
3. Taxes are high and houses, food, consumer goods are expensive (high cost of living)
4. The buildings and visual style is as bland Sim City as possible (nothing like London, Paris, Berlin etc), it’s North America at its most stereotypical.

It’s clearly not the worst of western countries to live in but number one? Come now.

That’s literally not the worst Canada has done and is doing. Like fucking over the first nations

Something tells me that IM doesn’t give a shit about what governments do to their minority populations.

I’m from the lower half of the US (raised in the Southeast, now living out west) and thank God I don’t have to live someplace with winters as brutal as Canada’s. I can’t stand extreme cold, ice on the roads drives me nuts, and seasonal depression sounds like an awful way to go every year.

If they want to say they’re the greatest country in the world, more power to them. If some Americans want to say our northern neighbor is the greatest country in the world, la dee da for you. I’ll help you buy a parka and a snow shovel and emigrate.

Me personally, I’m staying where I can wear Hawaiian shirts year round, the gals are always in daisy dukes, and my heating bill never exceeds $200 a year.

Japan did admit their war crimes, it is taught in schools. People are not forced to work themselves to death, people work themselves to death because of the prestige culture.

The island(S) is not overcrowded, not in the slightest, it feels more crowded in various European cities and Beijing.

But Japan being second on the list is laughable indeed. I mean China, India and Russia are in the top 20... Because while we are on n the topic of human rights and equality too

I’ve usually seen Denmark at the top of such lists, actually. Or at least some Scandinavian country.

While I agree with this list because it placed Japan in the second place, and I want my ethnically homogeneous ideas to be proven right, but putting Russia next to Ireland and goddamn India....
I’d pass on it...

Not America, can't be true.

I have it on good authority that America is Number One, and I don't think you can just throw that kind of claim around.
