According to the authors, the rankings found in the 2021 Best Countries report were determined by a survey of more than 17,000 business- and college-educated individuals who are middle class or higher, and citizens that are “nationally representative” of their country.

The analysis uses both data and storytelling to explore how countries compare on a several different global issues, such as corruption and racial equality.

In addition to the top overall spot, Canada was also ranked as the best country in the world for quality of life and social purpose, and the third most business-friendly and agile.

“[Canada is] perceived as having a good job market, caring about human rights, and is committed to social justice,” the report notes

According to a report by US news, Canada is now ranked as the best country in the world, rising from second place in last year's report, with Japan taking the spot instead, and germany in third.

So what do you think, do you think that Canada deserves the award? Or is it just a wasteland of maple trees?

I’m sorry but I can’t get behind this.

1. The weather is unacceptable. It’s a miserably cold place. It snows a lot and it’s even cold without it; you could escape to Vancouver but at the cost of depression-inducing grey skies for more than half the year.
2. It’s a very inconvenient place, you have to drive everywhere to do all errands.
3. Taxes are high and houses, food, consumer goods are expensive (high cost of living)
4. The buildings and visual style is as bland Sim City as possible (nothing like London, Paris, Berlin etc), it’s North America at its most stereotypical.

It’s clearly not the worst of western countries to live in but number one? Come now.

I’m more surprised that the US rated so high, given the social inequity.

Canada is nice hey, it gets the benefit of the US market and supplies without the troubles, so I can see the why it does well.

Don't know about #1, but Canada seems to be one of the best countries to live in. AFAIK Nordic countries like Denmark, Finland or Sweden have been some of the best countries to live in for quite some time, as well.

Personally I wouldn't want to live in a cold country. I grew up in a sunny and warm country and can't stand the cold. Such subjective preferences cannot always be accounted for, obviously. I wonder if there is a meaningful correlation between low temperatures and successful countries worldwide.

Surprised to see the US being at #6, considering the amount of people trying to convince everyone that the US is hell on Earth.

As a Canadian I even have to disagree. The study was done with a few amount of people, and the people asked were just upper-class businessmen, who don't reflect the views of any sort of majority. Social justice? What? We treat indigenous communities as if they are the scum of the Earth, there is huge sexism and corruption in the government and military and minorities are increasingly under fire from the far-right. Good job market? We have 2 million unemployed people for gods sake, what the hell? We don't deserve this award, it should promptly be given to New Zealand.

Eh, I'm not sure the US would benefit that much from having a third big party. The libertarians are too extreme IMO. The green party would probably not change much if it was to get more power. The rest are too small and/or support ideologies that are irrelevant in the US.

Still, getting #6 puts them above ~190 countries.
