DMX, rapper and actor, dies at 50

(CNN)DMX, a rapper known as much for his troubles as his music, has died, his family announced in a statement. He was 50.

"We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days," family's statement read in part.

The artist had been hospitalized since last week when he suffered a heart attack at his home in New York, according to his longtime attorney, Murray Richman.

DMX (Dark Man X) began rapping in the early 1990s and released his debut album, "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot," in 1998.

With the deaths of fellow rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur before he burst on the scene, DMX became one of the reigning stars of hardcore hip hop and was the premier artist signed to the Ruffhouse Records label.

His single, "Ruff Ryders Anthem," helped to seal his critical and commercial success.
The rapper released several albums over the years, including one of his most commercially successful, "...And Then There Was X," that was released in 1999 and was nominated for a Grammy in the best rap album category. It was one of three Grammy nominations for the rapper.

He sold millions of albums, boosted by hits like "Get At Me Dog" in 1998, "Party Up," in 1999 and "X Gon' Give It to Ya," in 2003.

He parlayed his growing fame into an acting career, appearing in multiple films including, "Romeo Must Die" and "Cradle 2 The Grave."

His professional achievements were often overshadowed by his issues with substance abuse and run-ins with the law. He pleaded guilty to tax fraud in 2017 and was sentenced to one year in prison.

In 2019, DMX canceled a planned concert tour to seek treatment for addiction, saying at the time that he was "putting family and sobriety first."

That same year he talked to GQ about his struggles.

"I just need to have a purpose," he said. "And I don't even know that purpose, because God has given me that purpose since before I was in the womb, so I'm going to fulfill that purpose ... whether I want to or not, whether I know it or not, because the story has already been written. If you appreciate the good, then you have

I did not expect this to happen, especially what with Prince Phillip dying. God bless him and his music, I'll miss him.

I do not know of DMX (but I think I saw something about his being on life support the other day), but this is incredibly tragic. In all seriousness, F.

It's a strange, sad day. Not only has Prince Phillip passed, but now Earl Simmons, also known by us all, of course, by the nomenclature DMX, has passed too; Men on different sides of society, all with different people to mourn them. I would say neither death was unexpected; Phillip had been ill for a while, and Earl, of course, had his own health struggles following his overdose. And yet, the expectation of the inevitable spectre of death finally arriving for people we have an attachment to never seems to dampen the pain we must endure when it actually does.
I've seen some.. contemptible people, celebrating the death of one or both, in certain places. They were both human beings, and by most accounts good men also, certainly undeserving of a permanent departure from our earthly plane, just as much as any who has ever lived has been. At the end of it all, were they not creatures, such that we are? The cold, unfeeling vastness is only bearable through love, Carl Sagan once said.. Why darken our own little slice of the universe with hate?
If you won't mourn them as kings, mourn them as men.

There's a name I haven't heard since middle school. All I remember about him is "X Gon' Give It to Ya", that was the super-cool song at the time.

I think that was the song my friend and I picked for black James Bond to use for his Aston Martin's sonic weapon because of how badass it was

I distinctly remember barreling down the freeway at 100mph, 3 in the god damned morning, blasting "X Gonna Give it to You" many years ago. A friend had just gone through a messy breakup and needed me to pick him up at the asscrack of dawn. Blasting some DMX while speeding down the interstate seemed to cheer us both up immensely.

Dunno if that is relevant, but every artist carries a few personal memories for people. DMX and his aggressive, swaggering music will be missed.

I’m not into the rap music scene. I’m a metal head. Prior to that I was into country music. So not exactly the guy to be listening to rap and such

If you listen to revolve by the melvins, you can have both of those things.

Awesome! Great song. \m/

Though Dee Snider has gotten old, still rocking it though.

Can’t wait for the pandemic to be over cause I got a list of bands I wanna see. I missed seeing Sabaton back in October of 2019.

The Melvins mix a ton of different genres with metal and it always sounds awesome
