He wasn't the monarch, he was her husband. Also I guess you don't care about how he has saved actual lives from bombers.

Then I suppose we must commemorate this person: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Hossein_Fahmideh

So why was he shuffled off to Bermuda at the start of the War?

I thought he was the one who married an American or something like that?
IDK.
(Oddly enough, I watched an episode of Seinfeld last night that called Edward VIII a Nazi sympathizer.)

What does that have to do with this? Can you stop your whataboutism and focus on the actual person this thread was made for?

Meghan Markle has nothing to do with it.

So he was racist because of some jokes? If he was serious when saying stuff like that I guess it would be kinda fucked up, but it just seems like he wasn't serious when saying those things, sure some aren't funny but that's how british humor is.

I imagine the Iranians do, given his Wikipedia page describes him as an "Iranian war hero."

Good for him, but why should the British care about an Iran-Iraq war hero? There’s no connection there.

I think we've found a new rule of the Internet/NSG: It will always, always turn into a discussion about race.

This is one of those instances were if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything. The man did far more to make the world a better place than you ever will.

I'm just saying, there are many people who do things like that (and are known to the public) but aren't mourned by too many people. They make a big slab and write names on it and it's ok. But when he dies he gets mourned around the globe?

Well, when a man who is most famous for making sexist and racist jokes dies it is to be expected...

Right, about Prince Philip. While I find some of his comments concerning, I'd be lying if I said I didn't admire him at least somewhat. He fled the home country that he barely knew as a baby in a fruit box, his father went off to Monte Carlo with his mistress, his mother was committed to an asylum (read up on her, she’s an interesting figure, declared Righteous Among the Nations), his pregnant sister died in a plane crash. He fought for Britain in WWII, even as his sisters married folks with Nazi connections.

Then, after all that, as a proud and independent man who aspired to have a naval career of his own, he willingly entered into a marriage with the heir to the throne, daughter of a king in declining health, knowing that – more sooner than later – he would have to set aside his career and ambitions for his wife, that – for the rest of his life – he would have to subordinate his life to hers, and that – for the rest of his life, and for the rest of history – he would be remembered as someone’s wife. And he did so, willingly and devotedly, for 72 years. If only more husbands were like that.

Philip had his flaws. He was from another generation. His values and beliefs didn’t necessarily line up with mine, and I myself have my concerns regarding the British monarchy (and monarchies in general) as an institution. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t respect him at least a little bit.

He was the husband of the Queen and Patriarch of the Royal Family, and a War Veteran. Are you really surprised that it would be in the news, do you not know how humans work?

To be fair I think he's more famous for being the Royal Consort followed by his charity work.

he was the husband of the monarch and made the world better. Why shouldn't he mourned around the world? Why are you being so disrespectful?
