By pure happenstance, I was actually watching the second episode of the Crown (in which the Queen's father passes away) when I learned of the news of her, now late, husband. Never seen the first episode, nor did I ever intend to see any of it, but I was around when someone else put it on.

The Prince Consort was, at the very least, an accomplished and dutiful citizen, a cultural icon, a decorated and heroic veteran, and a dedicated patriarch to his family. My own beliefs regarding the royal family, as individuals and as an institution, aside, his death is most definitely a great loss for the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and most especially for his wife of over 70 years and his children. Most definitely the man, being royalty within an imperialist regime as well as a human besides, had his faults and flaws, but for now, having passed, all his life can be acknowledged, in retrospect, as one very much lived and rich of experience from which - being such a public (and now historic) figure - all can derive something of worth.

Just two months off of 100 too, it's a shame he'll not receive a letter from the Queen now. In that crown episode she was writing to her father right as the news of his passing arrived, I wonder if she had a letter prepared for her husband's century as well? Will she persist to write one for herself? Either way, the answer will have a bitterness to it, but at least they had a relatively extended life together.

As a numismatist, I do hope that the mints of the Commonwealth produce something that does justice to the man's legacy to circulate. I imagine, and hope, there would be plenty of oversight. I don't doubt some out there will seek, eagerly, to seize on the unique commercial opportunity such commemoration offers, for bullion and in general for assorted memorabilia - such capitalisation of death I find highly distasteful.
