Only insofar as all states as a whole are exercises in violence, in which case your point is irrelevant. And, of course, not everyone agrees with this. And they really, really shouldn't. But that's neither here nor there.

That makes her head of state. She'd probably be an absolute monarch if she was their head of government. I get what you mean though

Eh, not necessarily. English monarchs effectively acted as head of state and government up to at least the death of William III, but they were still restricted by constitutional law and had been to some extent since the Tudor period; consequently, England was still a constitutional monarchy despite having a monarch who exercised executive authority.

As for Iran, it should be patently obvious why Iran doesn't give a shit any more.

You could make an argument for the First Fleet being an invasion of Australia and the subsequent Australian frontier wars. Though it's probably not the best comparison to the invasion of Iran in 1941.

It's... difficult to know what the exact geopolitical situation was like at the time, but it's extraordinarily unlikely that the groups the First Fleet encountered conceptualised an Australia that we'd recognise. Possibly they thought of Australia in more or less the same way that we'd think about Europe, Africa or Asia. Indeed, Australia kind of doesn't exist until 1901.

Frontier war or, at least, warfare is definitely an appropriate way of thinking about contact/the frontier in Australia. And it was, in large part, justified on the doctrine of terra nullius, i.e. that Australia was more like Antarctica.

why are you coming to memorial thread to write nasty things? what are you hoping to gain?

To be fair, if there's anywhere to dispassionately yet heatedly discuss the life and works of the recently dead, it's here on an anonymous internet discussion forum.

I wouldn't go say it to the face of the recently bereaved, but if a dead dood was previously a dick and did dickish things, I wouldn't want to gloss over that behaviour or pretend as if they were better than they were, just because they're now dead.

That said, I really didn't follow Phil's goings on to really say either way.
