Yes, I get it, he was fairly unwell in recent times. But considering how long the British Royals have lived for without passing away is shocking.

During the Second World War he served with distinction in the Mediterranean and Pacific Fleets. After the war, Philip was granted permission by George VI to marry Elizabeth. On the 'Prince Philip was a racist' front, it's perhaps worth remembering that his mother Princess Alice is counted as 'Righteous Among the Nations' for sheltering a Jewish family in Athens during the Second World War; Prince Philip attended the commemoration ceremony at Yad Vashem in Israel in 1994. She also undertook a lot of surreptitious relief work in occupied Greece, where she was one of only two members of the royal family to stay through the occupation. Again, I don't think it unlikely that an old-fashioned 99 year old former naval officer raised in European royalty held some views that we would consider unacceptable in 2021, but - even leaving aside his own war service - it's not as if the family are a bunch of irredeemable racists who never lifted a finger to help the less fortunate.



His great-aunt Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia is also an Orthodox saint who was martyred by the Bolsheviks (both Philip's mother and great-aunt became Orthodox nuns once widowed); though I suppose that's neither here nor there in the context of this thread.

Dying was the greatest PR stunt Michael Jackson ever pulled. If you're not old enough to remember, at the time of his death, Jackson was usually called Wacko Jacko and suspected of being a paedophile. About eight-ten years later, of course, it once again became acceptable/common to bring those points up. The only reason this was possible was because people confuse "being respectful" with "veneration" (see one of SR's other posts) and treat death as some reason to not talk about, for example with Philip, the "do you still throw spears?" incident because they confuse "respecting other peoples' responses" with "being charitable to the dead". Case in point, from the BBC obituary:

As NSCR quite neatly put it, the only reason we all care about this is because the dude was born into some deadbeat noble family and got lucky by marrying some rich heir to the British throne.
