It's a pretty harmless idea. Religion and culture are what's important, not race.

I'd say the US is held together by both a unique American culture made over the nearly 300 years of its existence combined with its civic institutions. The US was held together by its institutions before, say, the mid to late 20th century. Now, it's definitely held together by an American culture in much the same way as the UK is held together by a British culture or Russia by a Russian culture.
