If they HAD got their hands on him, and he'd got away (Capitol Police going where angels fear to tread...) then I'd agree they "tried" to hang Mike Pence.

My argument is that no amount of angry words are an act, and a gallows is just a prop, and you don't get to throw people in prison for a decade because of what they might have done if things had gone differently.

Establishing that individuals who were there but did nothing besides enter a restricted building, are not guilty of vandalism, theft, theft of classified material or intimidation of Congress persons, is essential to establish the innocence of millions of peaceful protesters who coincided in time and place with rioters and thugs. If we're going to treat mobs as all individually responsible for the worst that any of them did, then we're looking at a really bad score card this last year.

I do recognize intimidation as a crime. Angry slogans do become intimidating, as they get close enough and the numbers are so heavily on their side. But we don't need to punish the whole mob, when there's video of it. Pick out the worst of them, call them 'ringleaders' and try them. The average Joe can have a misdemeanor trespass charge.

Remember how enraged you felt about rightists calling all BLM protesters "rioters"? You felt (and maybe still do) the injustice of collective punishment. Or collective responsibility 'deserving' collective punishment. How have you forgotten so quickly?

Angry words do not get a pass when it’s threats of violence against a person while fighting police and entering a building where that person was located. The Secret Service also takes such threats rather serious.
