No, you don't understand, the way to contain Russia is to ally with smaller, poorer, more corrupt, and more extremist versions of it.

It doesn't exactly contain Russia if Russia refuses to leave the Donbass or Crimea...or maybe it does. If you wipe out mankind, there's no need to contain anybody.

Containing people in the place they already are is still containment. I don't think anyone is under the delusion that Russia will leave Crimea or will be ousted from it.

Because it would ratchet up tensions with Russia nearly to the point of war. You need to understand the Russian grand strategy, their historical desire for defense-in-depth, and the fear of subjugation by a foreign power. One of the main reasons Russia has started acting out is that, with many of its outlying territories aligning with its most likely military adversary, Russia feels (for good reason) incredibly vulnerable. Now, you may say that this is ridiculous because NATO was formed as a defensive alliance against Russia, but I doubt that will be much consolation to the Russians, who have been invaded by supposedly defensive alliances (all of them Western-European) formed against them four times since 1811.

That's true enough, Ukraine should probably cut its losses in regards to Crimea, even if the vote wasn't rigged, Crimeans always did prefer Russia to Ukraine.

I think nuclear war that is highly unlikely. What is more likely is Russia crying loudly about Ukraine joining NATO. Russia needs to learn about respecting basic sovereignty. If we let Russia continue doing what they want because the phobia of nuclear war, than Russia is going to continue annexing places, and hell, might try to even annex Alaska.

Turkey and Russia have had quite a rapprochement in recent years and the Convention of the Straits allows Russian warships through the Bosporus in peacetime anyway.

You’re not going to get any sympathy for me for Russia. They need to learn to respect basic sovereignty and stop annexing places because of “muh ethno-nationalism”

As opposed to the United States, which is well-known for respecting basic sovereignty? Come on, if Mexico joined a military alliance with China, the US would throw an absolute shitfit, the US threw an absolute shitfit over Cuba even trading with Russia.

You mean like that one time when we flipped out when nukes were moved to Cuba after we moved nukes to Turkey? :D

They won't try to annex Alaska, they're mostly focused on places where they can claim an ethnic connection at the moment, or at least protecting their current allied neighbours from Pro-Western governments. Ukraine checks both boxes, Alaska checks neither.

The main concern for Russia is preventing the ability of the US to deploy military forces to their borders. Russia's traditional defense against invasion is defense-in-depth, it doesn't have that anymore, most of Russia's major cities are within only 200 miles of its Western border, 200 miles with virtually no major natural barriers.
