You need to understand the Russian grand strategy, their historical desire for defense-in-depth, and the fear of subjugation by a foreign power. One of the main reasons Russia has started acting out is that, with many of its outlying territories aligning with its most likely military adversary, Russia feels (for good reason) incredibly vulnerable. Now, you may say that this is ridiculous because NATO was formed as a defensive alliance against Russia, but I doubt that will be much consolation to the Russians, who have been invaded by supposedly defensive alliances (all of them Western-European) formed against them four times since 1811.

The main concern for Russia is preventing the ability of the US to deploy military forces to their borders. Russia's traditional defense against invasion is defense-in-depth, it doesn't have that anymore, most of Russia's major cities are within only 200 miles of its Western border, 200 miles with virtually no major natural barriers.
