Just make the Canal as wide as 3 of the largest Ship in the world sideways, As deep as 3 of the tallest ships in the world, then ban ships over a certain size. Then just have a 2 way canal with more than enough space between the boats and the edge to prevent a similar incident. Then if we want 2 lanes in each direction we again fallow the 3 X 3 rule.

Or we could invest in institutional reforms which will reduce the chance of human error leading to such an incident and have institutional benefits in terms of reducing corruption in international commerce (get the laughter out of your system) instead of spending billions of dollars to prevent a problem that has happened exactly one time since 1870.

Building two 1500 metre wide and 250 metre deep trenches sounds like such a waste of time and energy.

Excavating roughly 71,250,000,000 cubic metres of earth is not easy and would likely never be worth the effort.

This is all well and good, but you'll be the one funding this project, won't you?

Because when compared to modern steels wood isn't really all that impressive as a construction material.

But then all the Ark ever had to do was float. Transport was not the objective.

You would encounter all of the same structural dangers just floating as you would sailing. The story of Noah's Ark is most likely allegorical, in ancient Christian interpretations, it was interpreted as a parable for Christ guiding his flock through the perils of the world.
