If this event was human error no law would've prevented it. Sure some people may be litigated against but existing laws did not prevent a 400,000 ton vessel ending up like this.

Why do you not want 0.8km-long Suezmax nuclear-powered gigafreighters? Because I bet someone might build something like that if they widened it so even a ship twice as long as Ever Given couldn't clear it.

When they built the Panama canal, they intentionally built it to accommodate ships far bigger than anything that could conceivably be built at the time, and even that hasn't sufficiently future-proofed it. I imagine Suez is similar; and we shouldn't assume that today's freight ships will be the same size as future freight ships.

Especially if the canal is enlarged because humans are idiots sometimes and will go "bigger canal route can handle BIGGER BOATS! Neener neener I bet I can build the biggest one that will fit before you can!"

Maybe they thought the canal could use a reef?

And tbh it's likely the container ships will get a lot bigger yet, as the only real limit to the size of them at the moment is procuring engines large enough for them, and the availability of ports and facilities that are large enough to handle them. If those issues are solved then the container ships could be a mile long or more if they really wanted them to be, with a correspondingly wider beam too.

I don't think the original designers had intended boats of that size to pass through.

The French, Brits, and the US wanted to maintain it. But Egypt said no. Caused a bit of a Crisis at the time.

Infrastructure maintenance in Egypt is an ongoing issue, regardless of who originally built that infrastructure. The Suez Canal was originally built by the French; much (though not all) of the railway system was originally built by the British. However, neither exists unchanged in its original form.

It's not so much who originally built the system; it's how it's maintained (and - in the case of the canal - who's piloting the ships).

So no, the French didn't necessarily build the entire canal in its current form; it was significantly expanded, and a second shipping lane added around the Ismailia section, as recently as 2014-2015, while other sections were widened and deepened in the same time frame; it's not as if the canal has just remained there unchanged for the last 150 years. The current crisis results from the ship running aground in one of the sections that hasn't been suitably expanded, while being piloted by someone who - allegedly - may not have been paying attention, not from the original French engineers failing to anticipate that ships would eventually get much bigger.

Though you have to admit that engineers not knowing that freighters would one day be thousand foot long hundred-thousand ton behemoths in the age of steam being considered incompetence is one of the more amusing examples of hindsight bias.

I've said too much already, but just know that the Weyland-Yutani Corporation strongly advises against this course of action. If it were to become necessary to destroy the vessel, it is imperative to use some form of thermonuclear device, preferably one deployed from orbit.
