There are privately developed vaccines that are more effective tbf. There is a lot that goes into which vaccine is better to use. Sometimes it's not actually the most effective one.

Also the state will look to recover R&D costs on drugs as well, that wont really change tbh. Healthcare is expensive and so is drug development. A mix of enforcing anti-trust enforcement, allowing Medicare to better negotiate drug prices, and allowing the importation of foreign made and developed drugs would do a lot to reduce the cost of drugs in the US for example.

I'm of the mind that some of the op-eds suggesting a permanent pandemic should actually be suppressed by the state. Not only does it have the potential to cause a lot of harm to individuals (I imagine a number of people might have such a belief to be a breaking point) but also fuels a lot of COVID conspiracy theories. While it seems quite likely that COVID might become endemic that doesn't mean the pandemic wont end and with effective vaccines it can be brought under control. We might have to take boosters every year and there will probably be the occasional outbreak in the future but those can likewise be managed.

I don't think hoping that somebody donates a lot of money is a sustainable way to fund all drugs development. It can hardly be relied upon, and then you also have the issue of certain people having their pet projects. Bill Gates used to donate a shitload of money to the WHO for example, the problem was that it was ringfenced for efforts to assist with the eradication of polio even when there were more pressing public health concerns.

EU leaders confirm vaccine export control

The leaders of EU member countries have confirmed strengthening export controls of COVID-19 vaccines manufactured within the bloc. An online summit held on Thursday discussed the vaccines, whose delivery has been delayed so far. Earlier on Wednesday, the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, proposed toughening the vaccine export authorization mechanism.

The leaders taking part in Thursday's summit agreed to call on drug companies to respect their contractual commitments with the European Union. The leaders also agreed to accelerate efforts to introduce vaccine certificates ahead of the summer tourism season. Such certificates are expected to help the resumption of free traveling within the bloc.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden took part in the virtual summit at the invitation of the EU. He agreed to cooperate on global issues such as coronavirus responses and resuscitating the economy.

Of course we can't live in a world where we distribute vaccines according to need. That would be silly.

And it just shows that BoJo's claim that the success of it was due to greed and capitalism etc is just total shit. If anything its development and subsequent distribution is an almost complete carbon-copy of the kind of system that existed in the allocations and rationing system in the UK during WW2.
