Your distaste for another round of mask mandates doesn't downplay the very real possibility that they may come back in many states and locales. I might not like it either, but the fact is it seems growingly likely.

I would just mandate the vaccine unless someone medically cannot get it.

I'm sure you know this, but the legality behind whether or not the federal govt can mandate vaccines is so murky that there is no chance they'd attempt it.

I can see a handful of progressive cites impose their own mask mandates, but I don’t see many states imposing mask mandates again.

I love the idea that reinstating masks will destroy credibility.

Among whom will it destroy credibility? You have the people who listen to the CDC already, who I imagine care enough about dealing with covid that they won't magically go "the CDC reinstated masks? Truly, they have lost all credibility!", and the people who don't already listen to the CDC either out of indifference (which it won't change) or because of conspiracies (which means they already don't find the CDC credible).

So if there is some mystical group out there that stuck with the CDC through the past year and a half but would randomly give up following the CDC if they bring back masks and they're significant enough to outweigh any and all benefits from bringing back masks, I want to know who they are.

The Centre of Disease Control should, in your opinion, say "We're through controlling this disease, do whatever you want". And you think that this would preserve their credibility.

It's a gut feeling. I wouldn't feel particularly safe eating at some place where the owners didn't give a fuck about one species of microorganisms. Who knows, they might not give a fuck about E coli either.

You might want to look up the actual HIPAA requirements. Your healthcare provider or insurer probably wouldn't be able to make your data public without your written approval (except in an anonymous form), but HIPAA does not stop someone ASKING you for your vaccinations status, for example.

It's perfectly reasonable to treat everyone like a risk unless they can verify they are not. Security checkpoints at the airport do just that.
