If Delta does beat vaccines then tbqh there might not be a way out of this mess and it might just be the new normal. The world is too globalized to just wait it out like diseases in the past, a variant can hop across the planet in a matter of hours at this point because of fast global travel.

"Just wait it out" never has been the normal way of handling diseases anyway. It used to be, everyone had loads of kids and then diseases would kill the surplus people to keep the population in check.

COVID is nowhere near as deadly as the plague, and there's no reason to think it ever would be.

There is also a debate about whether it was airborne. Evidence seems to point that it wasn't and a large reason for its spread was terrible hygiene and unsanitary conditions throughout Europe at the time.

Yersinia pestis isn't airborne. It's transmitted by infected fleas. It actually avoids oxygen, it's anaerobic.

Plague? Yeah. It still exists, but even when someone catches it, it doesn't spread very far with modern sanitation.

COVID is airborne, and the fixation with cleaning surfaces was a lot of hygiene theatre that did almost nothing to actually slow it down.

Well, sort of. Even with treatment, the risk of death is ~10%.

"Almost nothing" is predictably vague. Getting it on your hands then into your mouth, is a minor vector. But an entirely separate vector to the airborne one. People have caught the disease by contact, in situations where airborne risk was zero (it was reintroduced to NZ that way) and therefore "almost nothing" is technically incorrect.

Remember when being truly airborne wasn't known, and the "main" vector was exhaled droplets?

Now consider that many people have been using half-assed masks, instead of a surgical mask with a cosmetic mask over it (which looks as good). Now sure, even surgical masks aren't perfect, but they're better than a piece of cloth. Government didn't push people to use better masks, or two masks, even though government knew a bit of cloth was inadequate. They were having enough trouble making people wear any kind of mask.

Early on we were told the main vector of the virus was droplets. Droplets fall to the floor rather quickly, so 6 feet was picked as the safe distance. Now we know some of the virus is "airborne" though I'm not exactly sure if that's even smaller droplets that are buoyed in the air, or if individual viruses float about in the air. It doesn't matter: the number of people spending time in a certain volume of air, determined the risk to someone entering that air. And many shops still have a recommended maximum based on their floor area, regardless of the air volume (ie floor area times ceiling height).

I guess at base, scientists can only teach what they know at the time. If later science changes the model and the recommendations, scientists can't "update" the public because the public are too stupid. They'll think those scientists were wrong from the start, so stop paying any attention to them.

Violence. Car accidents. Smoking. Obesity. People die for want of wisdom, all the time. Government can only do so much.

It's a respiratory virus. It's not that difficult to guess that it's going to spread through the air more than surfaces. It's a matter of getting people to just think for five seconds -- including the experts, because educated people can still be dumb as bricks if they're not thinking.

Disinfecting surfaces is great for stopping bacterial infections, but it's never stopped people from getting seasonal colds, etc. That's not some scientific breakthrough that we only discovered this year. It's information that was right there for anyone that cared to stop and think about it. Hospitals started sterilizing things decades before I was even born, and surgery got way safer without all the gangrene, but the common cold was still common as ever.

Next lockdown: Tunisia

The Tunisian government added on Sunday another three governorates to the list of general lockdown as the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic worsens in the North African country.

The government had already put the north-central governorate of Kairouan under general lockdown on Saturday.

Siliana, Zaghouan, and Bejakn are the three new governorates where the infection rate reaches 400 cases out of every 100,000 residents, which prompted the decision of imposing a general lockdown, the government said in a statement.

Now four of the country's 24 governorates are under general lockdown. The lockdown measures in all four governorates became effective on Sunday.
