That makes some sense. It's bloody hard to get on a plane right now without a negative test.

They should make it legal for viruses to vote and run for office. Then they would have lots of antivax politicians.

In all seriousness, Republicans believe it should be legal for private businesses to refuse service or Employment to LGBT people but want to make it illegal for business to require vaccinations for their employees and customers. That is what really gives me the red ass.

I do think we’re going to experience a spike for memorial weekend but the vast majority of people that are going to get seriously sick are going to be unvaccinated Republicans and Trump supporters. Ruby red districts where vaccine hesitancy is sky high, there’s going to be a surge in hospital cases and deaths.

Every single "surge" prediction has been wrong, in fact embarrassingly so, and if one didn't happen during the Super Bowl back in February when we were still on the tail end of the peak in December-January it definitely is not going to happen now. And vaccine hesitancy is not a red/blue issue, it exists on both ends of the spectrum.

There is massive momentum towards herd immunity from the combination of natural immunity and vaccinations, neither of whose acquired immunities appear to be diminishing one bit. In fact, I think we're already at herd immunity nationwide for all intents and purposes.

Not really, if they are correct just a combination of two pre-existing ones. All of the major vaccines are highly effective against both strains, so if you're worried just get vaccinated!

That being said, I trust Vietnam's COVID reporting and scientific research about as much as China's, i.e. not at all. I think they just couldn't keep covering things up any longer so this is a convenient scapegoat for the spread of the Indian variant after their allegedly "excellent" COVID response.

You're not at herd immunity yet. You've still got hundreds of deaths a day.

Although as Galloism said, you're heading that way. Just keep up the vaccinations and convince Republicans that it's not a zombie virus and you'll be good.

I honestly think we're very close to that level; current case numbers are comparable to April-May 2020 despite expanded testing. Ohio is doing particularly great. And yes, I did enroll in the Vax-A-Million Lottery after I got it earlier today. I would like to win that lottery. :)

J&J Vaccine Update: 9 hours later, absolutely no arm pain or weakness, at this time it actually feels better than it ever has with a comparable flu shot. At most a little tender if I touch the bandage itself but no inflammation or swelling. Skin is completely normal other than the immediate injection site.

I felt kind of feverish off and on around 5-7pm and had a very mild headache that let up around 9pm, with loss of appetite from when I got vaccinated at 12:30 or so until the headache ended. Other than that I've been completely fine. Throughout the day I've been really thirsty and now I am really hungry since the headache stopped...ordered a massive pile of BW3 for dinner. We'll see how I feel overnight and tomorrow but it's looking good. From what I've read on Reddit the "train wreck" side effects for J&J typically hit within the 6-8 hour range.

Possible helps for those considering the vaccines - I drank a lot of water throughout the day, kept the injection arm active, and have regularly included specific immune-boosting supplements in my daily regimen. Vitamin D/K, Zinc/Copper, good multivitamin, and absorbable magnesium.

Deaths are a lagging indicator, of course.

I honestly think with the most vulnerable populations long-since vaccinated and the variety and the universal accessibility of safe, highly effective vaccines in the United States, the deaths from COVID are at this point nothing more than a personal choice. If you want to die from COVID because you don't want to be vaccinated, be my guest, but that's not the same as someone back in 2020 who didn't have the option.

Covid: WHO renames UK and other variants with Greek letters

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a new naming system for variants of Covid-19.

From now on the WHO will use Greek letters to refer to variants first detected in countries like the UK, South Africa and India.

The UK variant for instance is labelled as Alpha, the South African Beta, and the Indian as Delta.

The WHO said this was to simplify discussions but also to help remove some stigma from the names.

Earlier this month the Indian government criticised the naming of variant B.1.617.2 - first detected in the country last October - as the "Indian variant", though the WHO had never officially labelled it as such.

Someone tell the BBC that Gamma comes after Beta, not Delta.

Florida concert promoter charging unvaccinated fans $1,000 for tickets

A Florida gig promoter has come up with a way of making sure that as many fans as possible attending an upcoming punk show have been vaccinated. Paul Williams of Leadfoot Productions is putting on a gig at VFW Post #39 in St. Petersburg, Florida on June 26, featuring performances from Teenage Bottlerocket, MakeWar and Rutterkin.

In a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Williams has instituted a price of $18 per ticket for those who have been fully vaccinated, and $999.99 for those who haven’t. “We’re just trying to do a show safely,” Williams told WFTS. “And they should go out and get vaccinated to protect themselves and their families and their community.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently declared that those living in Florida have the right to get vaccinated or not and “no business or government entity will be able to deny you services based on your decision.” With that said, knowing he couldn’t force anyone who wasn’t vaccinated not to attend the show, Williams came up with the idea for the unique ticket pricing instead.

Speaking to ABC News, he added: “I also wanted it to be a vaccine drive to get the fence-sitters off the fence. I wanted to get the kids that want to go to shows to go out and get their shots.”

So far there has been no takers for the $1,000 tickets, but Williams has said that if anyone does buy one they will “be treated like everyone else”. While the response to his ticket policy has been “overwhelmingly positive” for the most part, Williams did mention that he’s received a number of spam calls from anti-vaxxers. “To care about people being safe is very bad apparently,” he added.

Ray Carlisle of Teenage Bottlerocket, one of the bands on the line-up, is on board with the policy, telling WFTS: “We’re all vaccinated. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated so we can see you in the pit.”

So bored of this pandemic..

..haven't seen my family for more than two years now, was looking to arrange to maybe go and visit in July, my brother lives in the US and we were trying to coordinate but..

..both of us are vaccinated, makes fuck all difference to our lives - there is no advantage to being vaccinated other than, I guess, the feeling you're contributing to herd immunity but.. whatever, still wear a mask, still have 21 days quarantine if I return, every rule still applies to me regardless..

..now that the UK seems to be going through another wave then what's the point in buying a ticket now, all in all if I still decided to go then I face a full fucking 31 days of quarantine I have to pay for myself..

..and no real end in sight.

One issue of living in a city state is there's just nowhere to go - almost feel it would be better to live in the States or Europe because at least there's a chance of moving to a different state, moving to a different country, just getting out for a while from stifling go nowhere..

I mean, ultimately I'm incredibly fortunate, I work, there's not a great deal of threat, I don't mind working from home at all but still..

..fuck this pandemic.
Eldest, that's what I am...Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn...he knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless — before the Dark Lord came from Outside..

The travel restrictions are rough if your family's spread out or you just have wanderlust. I think for people that don't do much traveling anyway, it's hard for them to understand how stifling it is being forced to stay put when that's not your usual way of life.
