Even a few examples of businesses being fined for lying in self-certification will get all the others in line ... because pretty much no business hasn't made an enemy in their community. Or a competitor! So long as the certification requirement are clear enough for members of the public to tell if a shop should have a mask order, those people will snitch.
And only a few examples of customers being prosecuted for not wearing a mask in a designated mask area, is all it takes for the shop staff to tell customers "put on this mask, because it's the law and you're putting our business at risk".
I've never worked in retail service (as the main part of a job) but still I'm pretty sure staff would rather be saying "the government requires you to wear this mask" rather than "store management requires you to wear this mask." The latter is far more likely to lose a customer.
Stores that have their own mask requirements that are in locations without a mask mandate care about the health of their employees and customers. I will happy to give them my money.
Right now it's 'I won't shop anywhere that refuses to recognise medical exemptions from mask wearing.' When the UK drops its mask mandate I'm pretty sure it's going to be 'I'll give my business to shops that don't enforce a rule that no longer exists.'
I know I need to do this, but man I do not want to do this. I am dreading the next few days.
