I don't think that the government should be given the authority to decide what risks people are allowed to take with their own health and I reject the idea that we all live in some sort of happy society in which we all love and take care of one another. I'm merely advocating for a transfer of power from the government to the people regarding whether they wish to shut themselves away or not without offering any advice on which course of action they should take. If it's about anything, from covid to drugs to gun control, I'm going to be on the side of free will.

No, the previous stuff you have said has repeatedly shown that your view is on the side of chaos, not free will.

You're free to risk your own life as much as you very well please, but you've got no right to risk or endanger other people's lives. What part of that's not clicking?

Ahh...new thread smell

Vaccine rollout in my cointry is happening slowly. The EU keeps blocking vaccines being exported to us, although luckily we are in a position to start producing vaccines in our country by May. All in all, we also have 0 community transmission, 0 lockdowns, so we are in a good spot.

Difficult to protect yourself from stray bullets flying everywhere from the automatic weapons in the hands of untrained and undisciplined civvies, as you proposed should happen in UKPol. Your view on coronavirus measures should be seen in light of that, as I think it'll be most illuminating for everyone on how to frame your views in a broader framework of the chaos that you advocate.

EU threatens ban on Covid vaccine exports to the UK

The European Union threatened on Wednesday to ban exports of COVID-19 vaccines to Britain to safeguard scarce doses for its own citizens facing a third wave of the pandemic that would jeopardise plans to restart travel this summer. With the number of COVID-related deaths in the EU topping 550,000 and less than a 10th of the bloc’s population inoculated, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said the epidemiological situation was worsening.

“We are in the crisis of the century,” she told reporters.

“We see the crest of a third wave forming in member states, and we know that we need to accelerate the vaccination rates.”
Von der Leyen said the flow of vaccine products was smooth with the United States but aired frustration over a lack of deliveries from AstraZeneca in Britain. She said 10 million doses had gone from EU plants to the former member state.

“We are still waiting for doses to come from the UK,” von der Leyen said in the latest sign of souring ties between Britain and the 27-nation bloc since Brexit.

“If this situation does not change, we will have to reflect on how to make exports to vaccine-producing countries dependent on their level of openness. We will reflect on whether exports to countries with higher vaccination rates than us are still proportionate.”

British foreign minister Dominic Raab hit back, accusing the Commission of brinkmanship and calling for an explanation after the government had received assurances that the EU did not intend to curb exports which are under contract.

“I think it takes some explaining because the world’s watching... It also cuts across the direct assurances that we had from the Commission,” Raab told Reuters. “We expect those assurances and legal, contracted supply to be respected.”

“Frankly, I’m surprised we’re having this conversation. It is normally what the UK and EU team up with to reject, when other countries with less democratic regimes than our own engage in that kind of brinkmanship.”

Von der Leyen spoke as six EU countries complained to Brussels about reduced deliveries that are hampering the bloc’s already troubled inoculation campaign struggling amid reduced deliveries by AstraZeneca.

Further complicating matters, various EU nations including its largest members Germany, France and Italy this week halted AstraZeneca shots pending safety checks.

The situation threatens plans announced by the Commission to launch a “green digital certificate” that would collate information on vaccinations, tests and COVID recovery to let travellers cross borders freely again.

Southern EU countries reliant on tourism hope the new certificate can win final approval in June and go online in time for the peak season. But countries including France, Belgium and Germany have voiced scepticism.

EU countries will be under pressure to agree a common position swiftly for their 450 million people. The task is further complicated by uncertainty over whether those inoculated can transmit the virus, and public scepticism about vaccines.

Opensource intelligence says YES regarding Christmas, in the UK.

https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/healthcare

In particular, have a gander at the "Patients admitted to hospital" chart. In case you're not aware, COVID typically incubates for around 7 days. And wouldn't you look at that massive peak post Christmas?

Since we love lived experiences these days, I can confirm that January was utterly miserable with regards to the number of people being admitted with COVID-19, and the number of people who were dying. We had cases of entire families who met up at Christmas, only to subsequently fall ill, and end up in hospital. And I live in a relatively lightly touched area - if you'd been badly injured in a car crash around January, and needed an ITU bed, you may have ended up being transferred up to 400 miles away, as all the ITU beds in the south at one point were full. Thankfully, lockdown and vaccination managed to break the back of that increase, otherwise a lot more badness would have happened.

It's amazing how quickly people forget that, only 70 years ago, 27% of people died before age 15.

https://ourworldindata.org/child-mortality-in-the-past

Government having authority to decide risks people took with their own health is the reason why, if you live in much of the western world, you don't have to worry about an infectious disease permanently disabling you, or leaving you dead before your time. I guess that's awfully inconsiderate of them. I'm guessing clean water supplies, working sewerage supplies, vector control programmes, vaccination against preventable diseases, and funding public health interventions are all rather nasty.

We don't all sit around the camp fire singing kumbaya, holding hands and pretending it's all wonderful. But given we're inherently selfish agents who like to, you know, live without premature and rather agonising death, most people have bought in to the whole "if we work together on some things, it might actually benefit us".

Ditto with COVID-19. Yeah it's not good for the economy at all, and people's livelihoods have suffered. But truth be told, it does affect you when the country you're in can no longer offer you any healthcare, because the system is so overwhelmed by COVID cases. People focus on the deaths - and rightly, every death is a tragedy. But if we're boiling this down to simple utilitarian means, then one has to look at the ultimate problem faced by not controlling cases - that the health system completely breaks down, and you can forget having a decent standard of care, because the resources don't exist.

In any case, Darwinian selection is already at play. Those industries that have moved to remote services, or to delivery, are booming. Those that refuse to adapt, unfortunately competition has eliminated them. Many of these pressures are known trends that have just been amplified, their timescales shortened.

There are quit a few different medical doctors who do not work directly with patients. Pathologists are an example of this.
