Every time someone complains about Musk's companies for the sake of it, a satellite gets its wings. It's getting pretty crowded up there!

Crowding orbital space is actually a serious problem, which could just block us from seeing the stars from Earth or could actually make it impossible to leave the planet for generations. But I'm not complaining about his companies at all. I'm complaining about the attitude that people have towards him specifically.

Why shouldn't I respect the Technoking?

Because he's a piece of shit.

If his company...

If Elon Musk never showed up to work again, the companies he's associated with would carry on just fine. If you get satellite internet some day, that will have nothing to do with Elon Musk. He isn't building the satellites himself. He isn't designing them. His name is just on some documents saying that he's in charge.

Yeah, and greatly furthering the mess that satellites are already making with ground-based optical astronomy in the process.

Edit: Oh yeah, and also increasing the risk of Kessler Syndrome like Ifreann mentioned.

It's like the problem with urban lighting, but now it is literally in the sky.

And then there are the signals screwing with radio astronomy...

Is it ever - just ask the astronomers.

-Ocelot- wrote:Why shouldn't I respect the Technoking? If his company scale prices down, it could obliterate my country's monopoly and offer everyone more options when it comes to internet services. I'm amazed at how much the American-majority NS seems to hate it, considering how much it could help them move away from their shitty regional monopolies.

Or countries could just enact/enforce anti-monopoly legislation, instead of just trading ShittyCom monopoly for a Musk monopoly.

You are just asking to be stuck with regional monopolies because satellite man scary. Government regulation on monopolies would be the ideal, but it's never going to happen. A company comes in and offers you an internet service that is guaranteed competition, is available everywhere, performs outstandingly but costs more. And even this isn't good enough for some people because satellite man scary.

These satellites are engineered to fall back to Earth when they stop working. It's not like they'll be up there forever.

NS Stats are mostly accurate except for a few things, like this nation is capitalist and the death penalty isn't in effect

News:All trade with Crabaiaia and Pikala has stopped as diplomats meet in Trenaka. Silvedanians are confused by Quentin Tarantulatino's new film, Seasonal Snackbox(This is a Bojack Horseman reference.) Weird song goes viral for making no sense.

So is this incredible satellite internet service only going to be available until the satellites fall back to Earth? Doesn't sound very good.

I just reserve the appropriate amount of skepticism towards companies irrespective of whethe they have epic bacon meme CEOS or not. And of course if you pre-surrender to the idea that there will be no regulation and don't fight for it then you're just creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

What a non answer. They're launching more all the time as they ramp up capacity, and aim to keep satellites up there as part of a set of constellations.

No, because more and more satellites are being launched. The total number of satellites will be constant.

This technology isn't a black box, you can actually look it up instead of treating it like a boogeyman that will "steal" your sky.

If they're continually replaced, that mess will be continually replenished, unless their albedo across the spectrum is significantly toned down.

And if they start smashing into orbital junk up there, they'll start spraying debris everywhere, which will make Earth orbit more dangerous in general. It's a big area, but if enough stuff is flying around...

Don't worry. By the time this becomes relevant, thanks to the Technoking we will already have observatories on the moon.

No, because more and more satellites are being launched. The total number of satellites will be constant.

So the problem of low Earth orbit being packed full of satellites will, effectively, be there indefinitely. So your point about the satellites not being there forever was meaningless.

This technology isn't a black box, you can actually look it up instead of treating it like a boogeyman who will "steal" your sky.

And you can look up Kessler syndrome and the reports from astronomers about these satellites interfering with our ability to observe space from Earth.

ok, so...why not care about the actual junk that orbits Earth instead of attacking a company that puts up functioning satellites that clean themselves up when they stop working? That is, if you actually care about this problem and not just using it to attack "evil rich man"?

Ground based telescopes on the Moon are a terrible idea. Prohibitively expensive and rife with engineering challenges in dealing with the extremes of the lunar environment and its effects on keeping instruments at the appropriate temperature. Nothing about them couldn't be accomplished much cheaper on an Earth orbiting platform or on the Earth's surface.

If this was an actual problem, the company wouldn't have made this internet network in the first place out of fear of creating destructive chain reactions that would damage most satellites. The fact that they went through with it means these (very expensive) satellites aren't going to collide with anything in the first place. No matter how you see it, this doesn't seem to be a real problem. If it was, it would affect the creators of the network more than anyone else.

Try finding some other reason to hate musk.

It sounds like a win-win scenario if you're knowledge of Bolivia ends with they have lithium and then also confusing them for Grenada in the 1980s.
