Every time I try to understand UK politics, my brain melts a little more. I can accept that they have some, uh, unique outlooks. But when it comes to trans people, the response is unhinged beyond belief. What the fuck is going on over there?

British public life is deeply transphobic. It’s different than the US, since over there transphobia is associated with poor rural people whereas over here transphobia is a thing that is baked into the media and political elite (the Guardian, for example, is a left wing publication but has also made pushing transphobia a major project of theirs).

Plus, now right wing politicians have seized onto the culture war stuff after Brexit stopped being a thing they could wedge on and are pushing their own transphobic narrative that nobody is really contesting in England or Wales (SNP are apparently contesting it in Scotland, and are seemingly far more credible about transgender rights than Labour, but ultimately SNP are not a factor outside of Scotland for obvious reasons, and Northern Ireland is so far down in the weeds that I’m not certain what is going on over there).

And will ever continue to fail, because at the end of the day what you are fighting against is simply more real than what you are fighting for.
