Taboo words change over time. Few of us here will flinch at a "fuck" or "shit"; people don't really use the euphemism "the F-word" any more, we just say "fuck". But if someone fully writes out the N-word or the R-word, people will flinch.

Which I think makes more sense than the previous generations' way of thinking about it. Talking about sex or poop doesn't do any social harm, but demeaning someone for their race or intelligence actually has negative consequences.

It depends on what we perceive as social harm to a significant extent. All of these words are seen as demeaning both to those who employ them and to those whom they're employed against, albeit for disparate reasons. The mechanisms of social control when it comes to language have largely remained the same, at least among well-adjusted people. The response to someone throwing around the r-word is usually something along the lines of "How old are you?", "That's not okay", or "That word is offensive/inappropriate." Hypocritical Twitter hate mobs notwithstanding.

I can't answer the survey because the question is to vague for the response. Is it okay to curse (pronounce preternatural harm on someone or something else?), rarely if ever. It is okay to swear? (use unwholesome words or words in an inappropriate manner) That is contextual.

It depends on the company one keeps; to whom one wants to show care and concern (by refraining from being offensive with one's speech); to whom wants to be offensive, or show their disregard, disdain and lack of caring for others by verbal statement. Those who curse are showing their hostility to other human beings. Those who swear inappropriately are by definition being rude/impolite/uncivil. The offense depends on the politeness (political care/concern for others) that is being kept. A rude society is a vain and uncaring society, and much more easy for hatemongers to influence and control. A society that prizes the value of the meaning of words in social intercourse are showing their care and concern for the humanity of others.

Swearing with a set of "curse words" when one is uncharacteristically angry or frightened is a part of the human condition, and a sign that something untoward has happened, is happening, or is imminent. When used as an alarm to take an appropriate level of action (e.g., not hitting one's thumb with a hammer ever again) it can be beneficial. One can then take appropriate measures to control of oneself or change their course of action etc.

When it is overused, like other things not done in a fitting manner it becomes worthless and a reflection of one's lack of character. A set of words chosen ahead of time to use (in the practice of the control of one's behavior) that may be appropriate to the company one is with, or for society in general. My grandfather's generation was taught in school to select a set of words to use that weren't offensive to the general public and to use whatever words were appropriate to whomever he was with. My generation (we went to the same school) was taught no such thing. We were just told that they (the teachers) were not allowed to discuss the matter.

The Bible doesn't use the word cursing, though. It specifically forbids anything "foul or dirty" and "bad language or foolish talk or dirty jokes." Anything that falls under that umbrella is a no-no, and pretty much all cursing does.

If anything, cursing is the epitome of force, the weapons of mass destruction in a language to exemplify just how severe your emotions are. It's not the sharpened sticks of a primitive-minded savage, but the razor-tipped blades of what this article claims is the sign of someone with a greater control over their own language.

The whole "classless swearing" misconception is a combination of the history of English ("shit" "fuck" and others were the Anglo-Saxon words for their more elegant Romance counterparts like "defecate" and "copulate." In Old and sometimes Middle English, those words were literally the terms one would use to describe those actions; the only negative connotation that they had was what they were referring to, but it had nothing to do with the manners of the speaker) as well as some generalized classist crap that pervades most of human history.

As someone who proudly uses his Anglo-Saxon vocabulary, especially while playing Mount and Blade, I think that your attempt to describe swearing is lackluster at best.
