It is unpronounceable. In Spanish the x doesn’t make the same sound as it does in English when it follows a “n” and the “x” in general doesn’t sound the same in Spanish.

Latinx isn’t pronounced Latin-X in Spanish but La-Tinks which isn’t a thing. Which is why Latine is the actual gender neutral word and not Latinx.

Seriously ask any Spanish speaking about this. They who’ll tell you the same thing.

Like it's been previously said, the earliest instance of BIPOC being used was by black people, and the BIPOC foundation was founded by women of color.

I am so tired of you saying shit is just a "white liberal thing" and having ZERO evidence to support it. Can you please, for once, not pull shit out your ass, and give me a single source for the claims you're making?

I’m tired of white liberals like yourself coming and telling us minorities what we can and can’t say. I’m tired of white liberals like yourself telling Spanish speakers that their language is wrong and must conform to what the white liberal imperialism says it should be.

This is cultural imperialism. You might want to stick your head in the ground and dismiss it out of hand but literally nobody who actually speaks Spanish says Latinx. Latine is far more accurate than Latinx.

TIL: I am secretly a white person. JFC you actually know more about my skin color than I know myself. I didn't know you were omniscient, Therm.

Latine is better than Latinx as it's less confusing, but again, Latinx fist appeared in a "Puerto Rican psychological periodical to challenge the gender binaries encoded in the Spanish language." Anyone can google this. But the thing about you is you don't. You just keep acting like white Americans are pushing this onto Spanish-speaking individuals when Spanish-speaking individuals came up with it.

Nobody is saying that the terms latino or latina are wrong, they are both fine terms when used to describe men and women, but does not accurately describe a non-binary person, which is why people have been searching for new, more inclusive terms. Eventually one of them will catch on.Currently latinx is unpopular, but it is still in use by Spanish-speaking individuals.

That said, slurs should not be used under any circumstances outside of maybe historical quotations.

Grounded for "damn it"?

Blimey... as a teenager, if my parents had grounded me for swearing, I'd have never left my house.

And to answer the OP, there's nothing wrong with swearing, especially used as an intensifier in conversation or in academic discussion.

Also, letting out a loud and proud "fuck" (pretend swearing doesn't work) is effective at reducing pain, so it can kind of rock when you're suffering.

*bolding mine*

The first time I visited a friend whos' family had a "swear jar" I dropped a $20 as soon as I walked in, so I'd have credits :D

Yes, but I would consider cursing a vice in most respects. While I get the appeal of being vulgar, crass, and disrespectful on occasion, and, indeed, it may even be appropriate to express disrespect, wrath, or annoyance in particular circumstances, doing so in excess demeans the person who does so.

I know how to swear and curse in about 15 languages.

Unfortunately, many of them only in spoken word, not written.

Perkele!

Fuck yes. I’d rather utter a good swear word here and there than blow a fuse when super angry.

It's fine to profane, especially if it's an informal social interaction with mates. But not in front of the children, as they'll think it's fine to profane in front of elders.

Just started in a book with a title that translates to "The Vicar Learns to Curse", which was written by a vicar, and, yes, he advocates for more cursing, with many theological and biblical arguments. Even as a non-christian like me, I find it really interesting. The author called Rikko Voorberg, and he does not really "preach the word" much, rather, he shows it by living it. If only all Christians (or, goodness, all people, period) were like that, the world might actually be a great, if sweary, place.

I really try not to curse around elderly people or children, which isn't difficult given that I seldom curse in general. Part of it is showing respect to social conventions and elders, part of it is not socializing children to think vulgarity and profanity are cool/mature, and part of it is wanting to cultivate an image and character that prioritize virtue, self-respect, and upright speech.

This.

Taboo words change over time. Few of us here will flinch at a "fuck" or "shit"; people don't really use the euphemism "the F-word" any more, we just say "fuck". But if someone fully writes out the N-word or the R-word, people will flinch.

Which I think makes more sense than the previous generations' way of thinking about it. Talking about sex or poop doesn't do any social harm, but demeaning someone for their race or intelligence actually has negative consequences.
