City Vs Country: What do you prefer?

Postby San Lumen » Thu Mar 04, 2021 5:55 pm

The rural-urban divide is growing in many places around the world. In recent years more people live in cities than rural areas There has never been a time in history before this were urban dwellers outnumbered rural ones.

Some prefer cities and others prefer rural areas. There is also the in between of suburbs the definition of which varies by country.

All of them have pro and cons but im not going to lay them all out here but instead share my brief opinion of all three.

I prefer cities for the diversity, culture and density. It's also easier to get around and in many a car is not needed as mass transit can take you anywhere you want to go. Suburbs are too spread out for me. The country is too quiet and more conservative but that can vary by country.

What do you all prefer and why?

The city because it's easier to get around. It's also easier to find tech stuff rather than going to malls kilometres away.

The size of my current town is perfect (about 70,000). Just big enough to have a large social circle, meet new people, and explore the main street, but just small enough that the sense of community is there. You run into folks you know at the coffee shop, the trails, the grocery store etc, and I love that feeling.

So, semi-urban, maybe?

coming from someone who lives in the suburbs:

pros of cities:
* i love the diversity and all the different cultures of cities
* it always amazes me how humans built all these buildings
* i hate cars, and you dont need a car in a city. its so easy to get around in a city because of how much public transit there is... and you can basically walk anywhere

pros of countryside:
* nature is nice and is really beautiful
* its quiet and peaceful
* its more laidback than the cities

What's your reasoning?

Cities are dense, crowded, noisy, often dirty and messy (I live near the Bay Area, so my perception of cities may be warped by that). I would not remotely want to live in one, especially the large ones in the Bay Area.

But, I will say that they can often be great places to visit. I've been to Oakland a few times and visited this fantastic observatory/museum which I greatly enjoy.

Rural areas are nice and quiet, and there is room for me to take walks without bumping into people every other step. I enjoy them, but I tend to prefer suburbs, they're a perfect balance in my opinion.

Suburbs, but if I have to choose one then the country. The commute is longer and I'm not a fan of bugs, but the silence is fantastic. I can't stand cities. They stress me out.

Gonna chock it up to just sensory overload. Same thing happens in malls, supermarkets, and even some smaller stores. Too many people, too many unfamiliar sounds, and way too many unusual smells. I'm especially sensitive to noise and smell so I can't really stand being in a city for more than maybe a week at max. I enjoy the aesthetic of lit-up cities at night and I like to drive through downtown Richmond on summer nights (when it's a lot more quiet and less crowded) but in the daytime they have a tendency to raise my anxiety level and hurt my ears/nose.

Cities, especially big ones like Toronto or Bogota or New York or whatever are superior to rural areas, in my opinion.

Perfectly understandable. cities are not for everyone.

Country with 15 to 20 acre spread. My first house was out in the country and allowed me to set up a shooting range, plus the many bon fire parties, buying old junker cars and racing them around the field or bring out the motocross bikes.

Cities these days are nothing more then cesspools of literal human excrement.

Both.

I live on the outskirts of a city, where jobs and education are. On weekends, I can just go to the hillsides/tea plantations/national park. They're within walking distance.

Well sometimes that literal cesspool of human excrement makes their way out to the country looking for shit to steal.
I guess living out in the country makes, shoot, shovel, shut up that much easier.

City, cause there's more to do.

I wonder at what point is a city a "big city?"

I live in a weird region where the suburbs are hard to define. Some of the towns here existed before the suburbs grew out and ate them up so they aren't really suburbs and other suburbs straight up grew so much they just became cities.

Definitely a city mouse. If I get more than about 50 miles away from a symphony orchestra my teeth start to itch. It's nice to visit the countryside sometimes but mostly to remind me why I prefer the city. Also if you are passing livestock on your way to work you live too far away from your job.
