The messaging from Civil Defence, now the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has always been "don't wait for official warnings" because in some areas of the country, you have as little as ten minutes to evacuate before the waves arrive from local tsunami threats.

Essentially don't wait for official warnings, if one feels a strong or long earthquake, and hears or sees unusual activity in the sea, get out. Don't wait, just go.

With this one they basically said "don't worry about COVID-19 protocols, just leave."

The Herald's done a helpful article on different kinds of tsunami.

It's not overblown at all. 8.1 is not a small earthquake and is in the range of magnitude that can produce significant tsunami in the right circumstances.

The "main event" is already over. Civil Defence has said that everyone who evacuated can head home, just to stay off the beaches to avoid "unusual currents and unpredictable surges". Of course it's better to be safe than sorry but my point stands.

There will be someone though, who goes out in their dinghy and disappears down a whirlpool. There's always someone ...

England gets about magnitude 2 maximum dont it? Thats not an earthquake its a burp

As to the NZ Earthquake note
1 8.1 Earthquake is big but the Kermadecs are uninhabited islands 10000km north of mainland New Zealand
2 The first 7.4 quake off the east coast looked to be on the same fault line as the 8.1 but was 90km deep so had no real thrust
3 There was a wave surge on the east coast of about 1m - few Tsunamis in NZ get bigger than 1 or 2 Meters (still a risk, but generally missing the wow factor of Japanese Tsunami)
4 I felt in Taupo as a gentle rocking as I lay in bed at 2.31am
