This isn't the WWF. It's an underground fight club/gambling ring. Everyone there is already breaking the law. And the kind of people who are down with "I'll give you $3000 if you beat the shit out that guy in an illegal cage match" tend not to be squeamish about beating the shit out of you when you don't come through with the $3000.

The match itself is legal. I mean, otherwise how could they put an ad for it in the papers?

You're talking in circles. The person in question is in a job were if they believed that no one would rob, attack, or even kill him then he is a complete idiot. He interacts with very violent people on a regular basis in a grey market gambling scene. The only thing you've managed to accomplish is make me realise that this character would be wearing concert shoes at the bottom of the Hudson the way he interacts with others in the underworld.

Violence in game fights (in an organized, legal, regulated environment) is different from assault and robbery etc

If he's robbing me that means he's an idiot who would have either ended up dead a long time ago from criminals or he would be out of a job or even arrested for breaking regulations.

A spider can lift 170 times its body weight, while a typical human can lift maybe 2 times their own weight. So picking up an adult human and throwing him across the room would be very easy when you have spider strength. The manager probably just watched you do that exact thing in the ring. So why the hell would he even try to stiff you?

Guy runs an illegal cage fighting operation, if he could be threatened by people stronger than him then he wouldn't have any money.

He runs a gambling establishment where his source of income would be individuals willing to fight to make money. He has to be a complete moron to think that he wouldn't get beaten up if he tries to cheat them.

He believes that there is a powerful invisible wall between you and him created by the law. He literally believes you can’t hit him because it would be against the law.

This is why when he gets robbed, he’s so shocked.

This characterisation is atrocious. No human being is remotely like this.

Both combat sports and gambling are heavily regulated. If some kid is coming in off the streets to fight, there's no way the operation is legal.

2 wrongs don't make a right

Postby Yamation » Tue Mar 09, 2021 6:01 pm

As shitty as the situation is, the robber still needs to be stopped and if you have the power to do so or stop or even just call 911 and not get physically involved, over all it is still the right thing to do. They are 2 separate situations and even though yours was not handle correctly, the robber still needs to be

This is transparently Peter Parker/Spider-Man's origin story, so you have Spider-Man's powers, which include superhuman speed and agility, super-strength in the "throw cars" range, wall-crawling, a "Spider Sense" that functions by unclear mechanisms, but which has the effect of giving you advance warning of threats, which lets you dodge attacks that even your amazing speed shouldn't really allow you to dodge, and - because the details make this specifically the Toby McGuire movie Spider-Man - the ability to shoot web from your wrists, though you don't have the experience to do much of anything useful with it at this point.

So, basically, you move and react many times faster than the robber, know when he's going to pull the trigger before he does, and are strong enough to effortlessly break him in half. Plus you can run on the ceiling and shoot sticky white stuff on him.

Scenarios become impossible to empathise with, when you have too many untrue conditions. In my opinion one big fantasy factor is quite enough. In this case, that people can have super-powers.

Super-powers have been thoroughly explored in comics and films. Or have they?

You get super powers <---- Impossible as far as anyone knows
You don't test or practice at all <----- Apparently the protagonist is a moron
You see an ad for something that ought to be illegal <------ If it was, they wouldn't advertise
You decide you could win it quite easily <------ because as well as being a moron, you're a psycho

This is about as far as I can get without losing the suspension of disbelief. I think my first response included "why on earth would I do that?" Asking what is most ethical in a situation that an ethical person wouldn't have got into at all, actively destroys the empathy of the reader with the protagonist.

I think in future scenarios, you try to avoid any "and then you do x" steps, and try to set it up so the reader is dropped into the middle of some situation they had no part in bringing about.
