I stop the robber, because that motherfucker is stealing $2900 of my money.

By some strange coincidence, the rest of the money is equal to the exact amount of interest that the manager owes on his debt to me, so I'll be keeping that as well...

I'd let the robber go. Screw the manager. Not my problem.

I'm not going to put my own life on the line for someone who just scammed me out of all of that money. I really wouldn't for anyone unless they were my family. Sorry manager, not my problem.

I'd call the police and tell them what I saw. Y'know those people we pay to handle situations like this.

I have a fluid hierarchy as to where I will put my life on the line. The absolute is myself. Very high is my family (blood or otherwise). It descends from there.

The goody little two-shoes in me says to stop the robber, but the realist says let the cunt go, manager can go fuck himself for all I care. So I'll go with the realistic option

The emergency food rations that the UNHCR uses costs about 50 cents a day to keep someone out of starvation. What’s the market value of the electronic device you’re currently using to post on NationStates?

You’d die for a stranger? You can start with things that are way less important to you than your life, in situations that are much more real than this movie-inspired hypothetical.

Unless, of course - and I rather suspect that this is the case - you’re just putting empty words out there to boast of how Christian-virtuous you are.

You just bragged.

I give in a very limited sense.

Those secret Santa crap from my job, I always asked for a toy suitable for a child. Due to my personal religious beliefs, I did not wish to celebrate, but if forced to, the that toy went into a toy drive. A child benefited.

Almost all my charity is driven into children's charities.

Well, I find it very hard to answer to such kind of questions, because even as a teenager I wouldn't have acted that way. If granted superpowers I wouldn't have used them to cheat in a sports, for obvious ethical reasons, and if I really were forced to do it anyway (such as needing that money for a life-or-death issue for me or a loved one) I would have done my best to avoid hurting the competitor. So... if I ended up in such a situation, I would really have acted "out of character" quite a lot, and I would probably have felt so ashamed and disappointed in myself that I would try my best to redeem myself, which probably means trying to stop the robber without hurting him.

Same.

When I put down a thousand dollars for a good laptop instead of settling for something half that price, I am demonstrating that the difference between a laptop I can comfortably play video games on and one that will stutter is more important to me than other things that I could be doing with that same extra $500 - such as, for example, saving multiple lives by helping charities with basic sanitation, nutrition, or health work.

I have a demonstrated preference for video games over the lives of strangers.

I cannot honestly square that with an image of myself as a good person, so I stopped pretending that I’m a good person a few years ago. I can be a very polite person, but not an altruistic one.

I advise everyone else here to try out that exercise, if you haven’t already. Look critically at what you actually spend most of your time, effort, and resources on, and think about what they say about your priorities and your personality. It’s an excellent shortcut for shattering bloated self-images, and I suspect most people will find that they’re a lot more selfish than they imagined themselves to be.

Killing for a cause is worth doing.

Dying to save another? Only certain others, while I live.

Dying indiscriminately for a stranger is foolish.

Assuming you are an American, I once signed and swore to a document that put my life on the line for you and the rest of the country. At 18, I would have said "fuck you". Now, as an older man, I say the same.

I commend the robber for their initiative and have them be my first henchman as I start a supervillain gang.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
