It seems several people want to discuss this topic, but do not provide sufficient OPs for their threads. So your friendly neighborhood Zul-ar is here to save the day.

Religion has existed for over five thousand years, the oldest of which being Hinduism. Today, about 84% of the world is religious, which is all but 1.2 billion people. Given this, it seems that the vast majority of humanity agrees that there exists some sort of deity/deities.

And yet, it seems dubious that there are over four thousand different ideas of what sort of deity this is. Not only that, but through scientific advancement we've found many things claimed in religious texts to be inconsistent with reality. Despite this, the majority continues to be convinced of the existence of the supernatural. Nonetheless as time goes on, the number of nonreligious grow, and societies seem to be separating themselves from religion.

NSG, what is your opinion on religion? Do you believe there exists a god/gods, or not?

I myself am personally not convinced of the existence of any deity, but if there is evidence for the existence of one, it will eventually surface.

I personally do believe in God. As for religion, it can be a good or bad thing depending on how its used and who's using it. In the hands of average people, religion is good or harmless but in the hands of fanatics and conmen, it becomes a force for destruction and oppression.

As a Theravada Buddhist, I believe there are countless gods who live in different heavens based on their meritorious deeds in past lives, as well as supernatural beings like the Chakravarti, Arhats, and Buddhas.

The funny thing here is that you (likely) still indirectly assume the abrahamic monotheistic god to be the default one.

Thats something that I notice very often with people who even are self-declared atheists.

I think every myth, legend, rumour, has an inkling of truth but for the most part i'm not religious at all. Ironically both schools i went too were christian church schools and i would go if they made us but otherwise it wasn't an interest of mine.

Apart from the sacrimental wafers, i loved those. I found them for sale in bulk boxes of 500 and part of me wants to do it.

I was raised secular, though went to Church of England schools. Was turned off of religion due to the problem of evil, and being unable to reconcile it with scientific materialism.

More or less the same with me.

Me... I personally want to see and wonder what my past selves were like, or my future selves are going to be. And Buddhist chants sound peaceful, too! I am not saying that other religions don't have peaceful-sounding chants, but for me, growing up as a Theravada Buddhist, the chants really do hit me differently in a good way.

On the topic of religion, well, I am fine with personal beliefs. I have a set of beliefs, so does someone else, and that is okay by me. ♥

While not based on a single religion, I have this superstition of trying not to call for bad omen, so as a plug, if I write about a world that is ending or getting redeveloped, I put past dates instead of the future, because I really would not want this world to die in a nuclear fire or whatever scenario I wrote, for instance.

If there is a god I hope the test to get into heaven is to sing the lyrics of any Supertramp song cos I'd nail that shit..

..which, to the point, given what any God particularly wants is unknowable then any religion is kind of irrelevant because, maybe singing Supertramp lyrics is the test, and then you've all wasted time believing in something to no effect because you're all, well most of you, going to hell anyway.
