Technically they were Caliphs and a lot of them did it, not just some. A number of non-Ottoman caliphs were in fact gay. I think it was Al-Hakam II who forced his wives to dress like men so that he could even stomach sleeping with them.
Oh and it wasn't just the leaders either, society as a whole was doing it. In Afghanistan up until recently it was common for Pashtun tribes to raid Hazara communities and take their sons as sex slaves.
“Society as a whole”? No.
Many people? Oh, yeah.
The Islamic world didn’t really start executing gay people, apostates or blasphemers until late colonization-decolonization. Some executions were actually even introduced by the British, though Muslims in those communities claim they come from the Qur’ân.
