Upheld single-handedly the shoe sales.

Is it true that calling someone an "Imelda" for owning a lot of shoes is still a moderately popular expression outside the Philippines?

Approval ratings in the philippines are pointless, they change quicker than a senators party allegiance with enough reason.

more than three decades on and we're seriously contemplating whether or not the zealot boxer who might well retire in his fifties the way he's going is a better poison pill than the murder-minded authoritarian with a china fetish (or his daughter, or that fucking suckup bong go)

name one good thing marcos has done for my country

let's not begrudge the man's accomplishments, but let's also look at the bigger picture -- marcos' penchant for public works mirrors duts', and for the same reasons, though duts has played the pr game far better than marcos has

Unfortunately on this 35th anniversary of the restoration of Filipino democracy, the populace of the Philippines has not done the right thing and removed Dutuerte from office, instead allowing his reign in blood to continue and allowing more children to be gunned down by death squads in what was "a free country." Apparently teenagers being shot to death for smoking weed isn't horrifying enough to make a majority of the country vote him out or throw him out, and unfortunately based on my own conversations with Filipinos, it seems like alot buy into this extremely toxic and stupid idea that the only way to solve drug addiction is to murder drug addicts. It's a cruel and barbaric philosophy but it looks like it has widespread support down in the Philippines. Either that or the authority complex that gets taught to kids from day one in church, in school and in the house is just too strong and no one wants to take a stand except for the socialist guerrillas and some left wing activist types. What a shame, I was hoping back in 2018 that by this point he wouldn't be president anymore

Apparently killing people for having a drug problem is supported in the Philippines. It's sad that a super majority of the country stands united with a mass murdering psychotic lunatic who once bragged about shooting someone in his school as a kid, but it's why when my ex girlfriend asked me to move with her to the Philippines, the answer was hell no.

There were other reasons too that were related in many ways to Dutuerte's everlasting reign.

It isnt that he hasn't been thrown out yet. Its that next to nothing seems to be being done. You saw the poll. A majority of Filipinos still like him.

Chill, it is a poll from Pulse Asia. Sample set is 1,000 people at most. We are a country of 200 million+ people.

Many of the polls I've seen though show him with a majority approval rating. You got any any show otherwise?

the mood of the people, from someone who lives here, if that's worth anything...

Actually I would say it's more of that the lumpenproletariat support Mr. Duterte. The people who are actually marginalised and are being slaughtered can barely read, and are often intimidated by armed men during election season.

Tbh, this. Duterte usually doesn't go back on his word and that already makes him better than most other presidents who say something and do nothing. If he's tough on a position, like say, foreign affairs, his decision is probably 80% actually bad for the country. But the people don't really care, all they want is a straightforward president who does what he says he'll do.

The Filipino public is all too easy to pacify given the complacency of past presidents.

Because it would be a good idea to take a look at PH 35 years after Marcos was 86'ed in '86. The fact that you made the thread is fine, no one here will begrudge you for it; the idealism of EDSA would make for a stark contrast to today.

the people on the street were idealists; most of the elite, on the other hand, crushed that idealism way easier than they could cory's term of office

still, it bears mentioning that the one idealist in power during those tumultuous years was señor tabako, fidel v ramos himself, whose policies... harmed more than they helped, in the long term
