Plagues have always occurred on this planet. It's simply bad luck that it happened in our time, at this moment. There is no divine entity that judges when it's time for punishment, because if so, then there have been plenty of times where the wrath of an angry deity would have been justified. Like the two World Wars, or any other war. Or heck, where is the wrath of the divine when clergymen abuse children? They're clergyman, they should fear the wrath of God, no? And yet... they don't, and no divine punishment descends down upon them.
