We haven't gotten things in the ground yet this year but last year we had: an apple tree, a cherry tree, various berry bushes, carrots, potatoes, corn, onions, lettuce, green beans, peas, celery and cucumbers. This year the setup will look probably mostly the same but I do want to try and plant some wheat and see how that goes.

Unfathomably important and cool things. I am very pro-farm (if you could believe it), and have wistfully thought of what being one would be like.

My parents keep a nice selection of edible plants in the garden so technically there's small scale farming there. An apple tree, Mulberry bush, chickens, a walnut tree, potatoes, onions, raspberries... I really enjoy doing the gardening and it's a bit of a shame that 2020's lockdowns ended up resulting in me doing that kind of work for the first time in over a decade.

Not a very good idea to base the entirety of a modern civilisation around though. They are already highly mechanised and advanced, a trend set to continue with less and less people needing to work in it.

Bad, because Dogmeat has the Settler faction set to hostile, and the Raider faction set to friendly. He was being a pain in the ass, so I said to him "wait for me in Sanctuary", but he just murdered all the Settlers there. :(

I agree. In a nation it is important to develop an ability to produce important supplies such as food from within itself so that if an issue were to occur causing supply line disruption from exterior countries, it still has important resources and does not simply starve to death. Agriculture is still important, it just takes place using more modern technology and methods.

the sooner humanity shifts to technologies that don't consume as much space as farmland for our dietary needs (say, hydroponics), the better for the earth as a whole

without the ecosystem-altering effects of intensive agriculture, vast swathes of land can be left to the forest, allowing numerous vulnerable and endangered species room to recover and thrive again

Not grasses, but they are known to get caught in brambles pretty easily. And that's not counting whatever this is.

If it is safe and a sustainable (in both economic & environmental terms) industry, I would honestly prefer cultured meat over the stuff cut out of animal corpses.

Seems cleaner to me.

Farming is great. I've lived on a self sustaining chicken farm. Never had to buy eggs. Thinking about doing that again when I get land. Depending on where I end up buying I could also get into some small scale rice and crawfish farming. It looks pretty interesting.

Farming’s about as important as any city job. My grandpa and uncle have farms, and I get free stuff from them sometimes. Beef, blueberries, chips, corn, squash, onions, bacon, and sometimes venison. We’d get milk too, but that all goes to Horizon.

I want more venison…
