I like that Rush's claims that tobacco is harmless, earned him the rebuke of lung cancer. Though towards the end he only smoked cigars: mouth cancer would have been more apt.

One of my friends said “Rush Limbaugh is dead? I wonder what’s for lunch today?”

I don't know yet. Maybe some cheesesteak subs. But I can tell you this... it might finally be safe to turn on the local AM radio station while eating. And if so, it'll be the first time since 1988.

I wonder if music's changed much?

Yep. Cheese steak with peppered fried onions and provolone on an Italian sub roll. Yummy.

AM Radio is still some guy talking total gibberish though.

Sounds good, that.

Expect a small war over the Realm of Rush on the AM airwaves. Ben Shapiro is the most likely heir but we'll see. As for music coming back the way it was when we were young, I ain't holding my breath. That world is long gone, sad as it sounds.

Just read through this thread.

For those wondering, a radio industry website implies the final show he personally hosted was December 23, 2020:
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/203420/rush-limbaugh-dies-of-lung-cancer/ wrote:On his final show on December 23, Limbaugh ended his program stating, “I know so many people think this program has changed their lives for the better. You have no idea what you all have meant to me and my family. The day’s gonna come, folks, where I’m not gonna be able to do this. I don’t know when that is. I want to be able to do it for as long as I want to do it.

I want to, but the day will come where I’m not going to be able to, and I want you to understand that even when the day comes, I’d like to be here. ‘Cause I have this sense of needing to constantly show my appreciation for all that you have done and meant to me. So I hope you all have a great Christmas, a great New Year, and I hope that the things that are in store for all of us in the coming year are certainly better than what we have endured in 2020.

I don’t know too many people who’ve enjoyed 2020. There are probably some sickos out there who have. But 2021 has to be better. We’re gonna try to make it that way here at the EIB Network. Again, folks, thank you so much. I wish there were a way to say it other than “thank you.” You’re just the best. My family is just the best. Thank you. Merry Christmas, everybody, from all of us to all of you. Make it happen!”

TURTLESHROOM II wrote:What Rush Limbaugh is is a radio shock jack. He makes inappropriate jokes and crude humor because he is a radio shock jock. Being an irreverent jack-A is part of the job and you don't listen to him for intellectual discussion. He was never a scholar or a gentleman, he was a shock jock.

I have listened to very little Limbaugh in my lifetime, and all of it second-hand. I can't make an informed opinion on Limbaugh because I have never actually sat down and listened to his radio show, but I can say with certainty that a political radio talk show is intended to be crass and offensive. They all are. It's why the phrase "shock jock" exists.

As someone who studied broadcast media in college, can confirm. The purpose of commercial broadcasting is to generate an audience and in turn tell potential advertisers 'we have these many thousands of people in these demographics who listen to our station'.

There's also an air of truth in the scene of the movie Private Parts where station management were discussing that people who disliked Howard Stern listened for longer than those who liked him, and it was the same reason: they wanted to hear what he'd say next!

In fact, there's very little difference between TV/radio personalities and carnival barkers, and they're all in show business.

TURTLESHROOM II wrote:If Rush Limbaugh triggers you, change the station.

We live in a world where negative advertising still effectively gets the word out about a product and/or service. So yes, change the station but IMVHO keep it to those closest to you and with everyone else focus on things you do like.

Farnhamia wrote:As for music coming back the way it was when we were young, I ain't holding my breath. That world is long gone, sad as it sounds.

Remember when DXing was fun? And if you were a kid every so often you'd get permission from your parents to call some station hundreds of miles away to tell the DJ you were listening? And every so often they'd respond to the call with 'OK, now go to bed!'

Yeah, music radio on AM is long gone. I could elaborate, but that'd be a different thread.

I never listened to Rush Limbaugh and was not a fan of the views and opinions expressed as heard from others, but there's no denying his impact he had on the medium and the United States.

I have a hard time being nice about this situation given all of the horrible things he's antagonistically said about homosexuals, women, and various minority groups during his career. It makes me angry to read many of his quotes. I don't think that his rhetoric was in any way constructive to American culture. It's sad that the United States of America produces heinous careers where people are paid to mock the most disadvantaged members of its society. I have no intention to personally condemn Rush Limbaugh but to ignore his cruel conduct would not be just.

The fact that he was paid so highly says a lot about who we are. The United States should be the most inclusive country on the planet. Nobody should feel like they don't belong in our society but that's definitely not what we're showing each other.

In happy news, someone using the nickname "Quentin Quarantino" has inspired people to have a little fundraiser for planned parenthood, where every donation is "in memory of Rush Limbaugh".

At the time of writing, over a million dollars has been donated.

They probably mean "gay people exist, eeewww".

Or to rephrase: a boy and a girl liking eachother with lots of blushing and a sneaked in kiss in a kids cartoon is fine, two boys or two girls liking eachother that way is not. So 12 year old Aang can be in love with 14 year old Katara, 16 year old Korra can love 18 year old Mako but 21 year old Korra can not love 22 year old Asami.

As an anecdote*, I was not aware that non-straight people actually existed until 2016, so increasing awareness of them in education and media is probably a good thing in general, although the latter has certainly been accomplished. If it is the intention of society for new generations to fully accept non-straight relationships without drawing a distinction between them and straight relationships, having them learn about both simultaneously is important.

*This is my personal experience, not sure how prevalent it is.

To be fair, there are some series that go... far. Where the gay relationship in my example Avatar was subtle and slowly worked towards,
the remake of She-ra almost makes being straight an oddity.

Of course, it is a bit odd that people can totally accept worlds filled with magic, scifi level technology, non-human sentients etc. etc. - but not sexual preferences that differ from their own.

Then again, I have heard no complaints about Wanda having a relationship with a robotic sexdoll in the latest Disneyhit...

I haven't said anything so far because what I'd like to say I mostly can't. But I will say this. Rush Limbaugh is actually being given less credit than he deserves and less blame than he deserves. Even the NY Times columns haven't done justice to what he started. What he did in his four decades of talk radio, what he said, and how he said it, let him do something undreamed-of in history before now thanks to the power of the technology he possessed save in the most repressive of dictatorships.

What he did was, quite literally, create an entirely new reality, and showed the world that there was no such thing as a single objective reality.

Without Rush Limbaugh, the constant gaslighting of the public into a hatred of American institutions like the media and education could not have been. Without Rush Limbaugh, the American Right could not have insulated itself from facts to the same level it has. Only in conservative books would such things be seen, and not too many people read political books unless they're particularly spicy anyway.

Without Rush Limbaugh and those who worked alongside him like Roger Ailes, the conservative media that followed his playbook by saying only they told the truth, disregard all others who claim to use "facts" could not have come without a lit more effort from the Murdochs of the world.

Without Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ben Shapiro, Ann Coulter, Alex Jones, and so many others could not have followed. Without Rush Limbaugh, great architect of consensus reality drawn by public perception, we would not see a Trump presidency brought by a constant stream of deliberate misinformation sprinkled with ideological propaganda.

And without Rush Limbaugh and his tactics, I'd even go so far as to say the new religion of QAnon could not have been.

So for those who disagree with the man, let's remember why we disagree most of all. We disagree and dislike, even as we show respect to those who loved him, because he is one of the primary architects of the torn American fabric we have to try to sew back together.
