Oh he is, but Toomey's seat in PA is even more slim.

I'm unsure on that, just because of Ron Johnson's special kind of crazy.

Yes, considering it was the closest Republican held seat in 2016, but all depends on a number of issues, chief of which is turnout.

Which Democrats are actively trying to ruin.

True, but then again Toomey is retiring making the seat wide open.

I'm unsure who that actually helps personally, when people retire. Especially if they're already unpopular as is.

Republicans fired the Parliamentarian to get the 2017 tax cuts passed through reconciliation. If the supreme court wanted to stop the $15 minimum wage they could just rule it as unconstitutional no matter which bill it's in (a possibility).

Reconciliation is a Senate rule. Just "ignoring" the Parliamentarian would mean breaking a Senate rule. Now I can't think of a precedent, but I'm pretty sure the Supreme Court can hear partisan challenges to a law which was not legally passed.

Sacking the Parliamentarian might work, though I suspect the new one would just check the figures used by the old one and then rule the same way. In any case, you'd have to bring the amendment to a vote again. As you say, it's a possibility, but not one worth delaying the Covid bill for.

A-Series-Of-Tubes wrote:And for that you get a massive political defeat ("remember when Democrats tried to destroy the economy with an extreme AND ILLEGAL minimum wage rise? Vote Mnuchin for NY 18th!") which will make it much harder to pass any minimum wage rise in the future.

Uh no, a $15 minimum wage is quite popular even among Republicans.

Weirdly it doesn't seem to have become polarized yet. The lack of even one R Senator in favor though, shows they expect it to.

A-Series-Of-Tubes wrote:At some stage Dems should give some ground on the number, in exchange for indexation, which has only mild budgetary effects over 10 years, but would mean a small increase every year and never having to fight this battle again.

Less than a living wage, indexed so that they can never revisit it?

Indexation has almost no impact on the budget, even over ten years. There's no good argument for it causing unemployment, and the inflationary effect would be miniscule. It does stop the escalation of popular demand for a real raise, but as you note the majority already support a quite substantial raise (and even more would support at least $10) so why would that demand ever decrease with small CPI increases each year?

Raising the base rate can be done any time in the future, when Democrats have a sufficient majority. The demand won't be any more (if there's indexation) but it won't be any less either. Or, as I think is more likely, Moderate Republicans will neutralize the votes of Manchin and Sinema for a compromise like $12 mw.

Republicans have also shown sympathy for subsidizing low wages in the past. Earned Income Tax Credit is a de facto wage subsidy. This could improve the lot of low wage workers in those barbarous states which don't actually recognize Federal minimum wages.

Senate rules aren't laws, it's why they can be changed on a whim. There's nothing you could bring a court case over if the Dems did anything like that, it would just set precedent the GOP can do it too.
