Oakland has been facing a crisis as San Francisco has priced out even well off people, afluent white home owners have been displacing long time black residents of Oakland driving them even further outward in the Bay Area or out of California in general. As a privately funded project it seems like an effort to stem a trend that has already disproportionately effects the black community of Oakland which has been a large part of that city's make up for decades. Repeatedly we've seen so-called 'colorblind' policies that end up benefiting predominantly white residents at and ignoring marginalized groups.

Or it's just another example of how 'white people are the real victims or racism'. Your mileage may vary. But I thought I'd actually include the context so people's self righteous rage was at least focused on what was actually going on and why.

To add on, as a group, white people are more advantaged. That does not preclude individual whites from being disadvantaged.

Indeed, that's exactly the key. Some group of people are disadvantaged as a group - Black people are more likely to be victim of police brutality, have a harder time getting a job, are more likely to be sentenced to prison even for a minor offense, and more likely to live in poverty. But that doesn't mean an individual white person can't be victim of police brutality, or unfairly sentenced, or live in poverty.

It's important to acknowledge those groups aren't treated equally as groups, analyze the reasons behind those discrimination, and see how we can mend the situation. But that shouldn't apply to individuals. When we start handing out benefits to individuals, we should give them to those who need it the most - regardless of the "groups" they belong to or not. That's something I really like in French Republicanism. We do have social scientist who study the roots and effects of discrimination, but it's unthinkable to give social help only to people of a certain skin color.

And it also applies on many other topics. Women are much more often victims of rape than men, and it needs to be said, studied, and mended as much as possible. But when a man is victim of rape, he deserves the same level of support and help than a woman would.
