On November 30, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden announced that Tanden would be his nominee for Director of the Office of Management and Budget.[39] Immediately following the announcement, Tanden deleted over 1,000 of her previous tweets,[40] and changed her Twitter bio from "progressive" to "liberal."[41] During the confirmation hearing, Tanden apologized for several of her tweets attacking Republican senators, including tweets calling Susan Collins "the worst", comparing Ted Cruz to vampires and Lord Voldemort, and using the nickname "Moscow Mitch" for Mitch McConnell.[42] Senator John Cornyn described Tanden as "radioactive" in contrast to other Biden nominees he felt were more acceptable,[43] while Senator John Kennedy stated that she "called Senator Sanders everything but an ignorant slut."[44][45] NPR described her as "Biden's most controversial Cabinet pick."[46]

Many members of the 2016 and 2020 Bernie Sanders presidential campaigns, such as Briahna Joy Gray, strongly dislike Tanden and have drawn an explicit distinction between "progressives and Neera Tanden"; Politico described her nomination as "the equivalent of rubbing salt in the wound."[47]

While some of that is concerning...... you know, some is damn hilarious.

No, it's a reason to tear down capitalism entirely.

Automation would most likely happen regardless of whether capitalism existed or not. Humans have always sought to make our lives and work easier, quicker and safer and automation is simply a modern form of that particular trait.

Some of the automation efforts do have valid reasons. Eliminate repetitive jobs. Error prone jobs, etc. Then you have the effort driving because (in the case of the US) workers cost too much.

It’s a vicious cycle. Regular wage is too much so they automate and in time there will be more people then jobs. Governments will be forced to rethink a few things. Thinks live universal health care, living wage, etc.

Automation is a trap: One who automates kills off jobs, one who does not will be outcompeted.

Because Luddism doesn’t actually solve the underlying issues in a society, and because artificially staving off increases in productivity is dumb.

Because it's arguably better for some jobs, especially ones that are overly dangerous. Human lives can be saved, which allows for more jobs, probably. I'm not an economist.

sufficiently restrictive anti-automation legislation in industries where working is not a constant health hazard does mean lower productivity, yes, but it will also mean more employed people, who will presumably be empowered enough to negotiate better wages for themselves

that said, i'm not sold on the idea that ubi will engender apathy among the nonrich either, though among the fatuously wellheeled? sure, no doubt about it

For what? It's the electric company's responsibility to provide those services to customers. It's like charging the passengers if a bus's engine breaks down. That question is rhetorical, by the way. I know the electric company is just greedy.

that's what happens when you privatize a public good -- all costs are passed on to consumers, who will have to pay or be cut off, with potential for abuse (say, deliberately sabotaging efforts at maintenance, firing experienced crews, or simply jacking up prices with the hope of natural disasters) not only rife but expected

the aftermath of a snowstorm is no exception

Things like this make me confused when America's enemies make up terrible things about America. Just play stories like this or from Flint, Michigan. Half of the time, anti-America propaganda writes itself.

I look forward to the day we can automate most of the manual labor based jobs.

Then we can start figuring out Star Trek Fabricators and stuff.

Because automation is ultimately how we escape having to slave for the Man 40 hours a week in order to survive.

We just have to get rid of this attitude that people don't deserve to survive if they don't slave for the Man for 40 hours a week.
