Let's talk about irrational fears

Postby CoraSpia » Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:12 pm

Hello NSG!

There are some things, like being shot in the head by the strange guy pointing a gun at you at a particular moment, that we should all be afraid of. Additional things to have a healthy sense of fear of include uncontrolled fire, large explosions, that feeling you get in your gut after eating a takeaway kebab at 3 AM and politicians with grand plans. There are however a lot of things that people still fear, despite the fact that they are not going to cause them harm.

Over 6 % of people, for example, are afraid of heights. Over 10 % of US adults are scared of flying. Stranger examples include named phobias including those of 'new things,' dancing, numbers, sunlight, and belly buttons. Presumably somebody reported fearing these things to a doctor or another health professional, and thus was the phobia named.

I on the other hand am absolutely terrified of soil. I don't just dislike soil or find it gross: touching soil will lead me into a full-on episode of almost complete fear paralysis. Yes, by soil I am referring to the stuff under the grass...the stuff that 'normal' people are insane enough to put their hands in in order to plant seeds. The thing that schools, in order I presume to torture their students, force them to plant potatos in.

I am well aware that my fear of soil is absolutely mental, that soil in itself is not going to do me any harm and that unless I get professionals in the garden will look 'like that' forever. I still knocked over a potted plant and was a nervous wreck for an hour though.
Does anyone else have any similar fears, or know anyone who does? Perhaps you have one of the odder fears and can explain to us whether belly buttons really are scarier than spiders or what's inside of those grow bags you get at the garden centre. It's time to discuss the things that make us totally lose our shit and which nobody else understands.

Mods: I appreciate that this op might set off your fear of bloggy OPs. If it crosses that line lmk and I'll change it.

I have quite a fear of writing fiction that might become bad omens. For example, shameless plug - Valentine Z went into a total nuclear war MAD in 1998. The year was supposed to be 2020-ish or 2030s, BUT I changed the date to the one in the past because I really don't want an actual hellfire to be here.

I also have a fear thinking about the past times where I slipped on the floors and nearly hit my head or broke my limbs. To clarify, I was relieved that I didn't break a bone in the past, but I have a fear that one day I might just randomly slip and I might not recover and thus the fall.

Talk about my irrational fears? Why on earth would I do that!?

I will say the fear of heights is rational. No matter how many times you experience it, it's still there though perhaps channeled into extreme attention to any factor which could cause you to fall.

By the way, old people need to pay attention to that fear again, or they'll break a bone just from tripping over. Poor balance, sure, but also forgetting that they need to maintain conscious balance and can't rely on the ganglions to handle it. This is like the "extreme attention" of a rock climber or a worker up a ladder: it's deliberate because it is motivated by fear.

My fear of butterflies should just tell you how irrational my fears are. I think I talked about in the TET. It’s really bad and I’ve still not been able to get over it.

I consider that a rational fear. Especially if they're the nasty little sods that can sting more than once (that's why I'm not so scared of honeybees; because they die if they sting you and so usually leave you alone if they don't perceive you as a threat, I've found).

I have a few phobias that I consider rational.

My fear of fireworks is probably not (but, as I may have mentioned before, that can be traced to some teens throwing a jumping jack at me and my mother when I was a toddler), and my fear that the bridge over a road or water will break beneath me is almost definitely unfounded (ditto, piers -- which is why I always make myself walk to the end of the pier and back if I happen to visit the seaside, to face it head-on). I won't be ruled by fear.

Megamouth sharks.

Though I can trace my fear to an exact moment when my father thought it would be funny to slam my head into the glass and hold it there of the preserved megamouth's case at the LA natural history museum.

Needles. I didn't used to hate them. But I had a bad experience with one as a teenager and now I can't stand to look at them. When I had to get shots a few years back, I had to tell the nurse that I wouldn't be looking at the needle, but I needed to know exactly when she was going to put it in. I don't even know why they bother me so much. I know it's irrational. But I can't change it.

In addition, I have another weird quirk that I've never heard of anyone else having. I hate it when the tines of a fork cross with the tines of another fork. Looking at it makes me want to vomit. It makes absolutely no sense to me or anyone else, but it is what it is, I guess.

I've got a phobia, which tends to vary quite widely in strength depending on how stressed I am. I'd share what exactly it is, but I'm a little paranoid about sharing my weaknesses on the internet, even to people who I trust like you folks.

I don't know why it varies in strength so wildly for me, but some times in my life it basically camped on my mind 24/7 and guided most of my plans, while other times like now it's just a strong dislike of the thing in question.
