I wonder how long it’s going to be until it’s a full blown civil war

It’s honestly already there. The Bamar might not be rising up in rebellion against the military right now, but many of the armed ethnic governments have abandoned their truces with the civilian government, and clashes are rapidly accelerating throughout the country.

are those armed militias allying themselves with whatever armed bamar resistance might have chosen to rise up?

Hopefully though, before we get the bloodshed that we have already witnessed in places like Ukraine and Syria, this will be resolved peacefully and the undemocratic usurpers be brought to a just and fair trial.

given 1988, the fact that this coup still happened may mean widespread carnage is on the horizon for this new generation of powerdrunk military men

Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Myanmar in one of the largest demonstrations yet against the country's military coup.

Businesses closed as employees joined a general strike, despite a military statement that said protesters were risking their lives by turning out.

This is really good news. Maybe they sould also make a nationwide general strike. At some point even Tatmadaw has to realize that it cannot run the nation with a minimum of public support.

We should just cut the middleman entirely and raise the cost of food and water for soldiers the cronies by 5000%.

Though of course, that's just a piece of morbid hyperbole from me. But yes, don't "scratch your heads like monkeys" (pulling a surprised Pikachu, basically when you get caught) when we as people protested.

But given the stubborn nature of these folks, I can only hope that it goes relatively well.

which brings me to something i should've asked earlier: is knowledge of the bloody aftermath of 1988 widespread within myanmar itself? i mean, it can't possibly have been taught in schools unless the military really wanted to rub it in

As far as I am concerned, we heard of it a little, but it's not something that we have been told or heard of. I wasn't the most attentive kid back then in school, and even though I do remember that our history classes were mostly up until WW2, so...

Without beating around the bush, I only know about 1988 from my parents and relatives. I'm not sure about how the other kids know, whether because I forgot that it was taught, or that they too were told by their relatives.

A'right, give me a moment!

The green sign says 2 / Northern Neighborhood Office of Administration, Thaketa Township.

-----

The red banner has the title on the top: Let us protest on the unfair coup and seizure of power.

The text says: Given the fact that the community leader is not someone that we as people have elected, any person appointed by the military dictators will absolutely (absolutely) be unaccepted.

There's an UN / UNSC thing about how the military has done war crimes and that the international community cannot simply stand idle while the Burmese (and the ethnic groups, as they are mentioned) are being pushed around. So, there is that. I didn't really watch it fully, just skimmed through.

As for the protests, things were not looking too good. As far as I know and am concerned, no one has been shot (yet), but there were riot shield polices around marching in lines to push them out. A few days back, multiple officers came into a house to arrest a woman (whilst in full view of her kid). She was later let go and cleared of the charges, but you would think that they would maybe send just one officer to make it less traumatic for the kid?

Ahh, interesting find, thank you. ^^

I am amazed and warmed by two communities banding up together, so this is cool. I just wish that we stick together with each other more - for an entirely different reason other than coups and protests.

Solidarity is a great thing indeed

Myanmar's military rulers say they have fired the country's ambassador to the United Nations after he called for help to remove the army from power.

In an emotional speech, Kyaw Moe Tun said no-one should co-operate with the military until it handed back power to the democratically elected government.

~26 deaths today. Multiple arrests, medical equipment being stolen, doctors being forced off of hospitals, and of course, shots fired in the streets and towards protestors.

It's no longer safe to simply protest, and the military divisions involved in this are several degrees of fucked up with awful history behind them.

I think the way forward against this barbarism is with strikes, sit-ins, and civil disobedience to make the country totally ungovernable and economically paralysed.
