Why are we so quick to want slaveholder's names on schools? Pick someone different. And if the new name also ended up doing horrific things, like owning your great grandparents as slaves, we pick someone else.
The silliness of getting offended that things offend marginalized people is too real. Let it be. Or if you're that attached to George Washington, send your kid to a different school.

Abolitionism in the North has leagued itself with Radical Democracy, and so the Slave Power was forced to ally itself with the Money Power; that is the great fact of the age.

There are plenty of things in America named after Washington. There's a state and a capital district named after him even. Why does his name need to be on a school if the students and community there don't want it?

School choice isn't bad policy, why shouldn’t parents be able to choose where their kids go to school instead of it being confined to where they live? Those that can’t afford private school, but the public school in the area is dangerous (as many American schools are)?

Cool, then don't let him be the name of the school either. Simple!
There's not a valid reason to keep Washington's name on that school if people are upset about his legacy. Slavery is a recent evil. Harriett Tubman wasn't living it up with the Vikings, she's someone great great grandmother. The legacy of slavery still affects communities in the United States today. And some of the Founding Fathers fought tooth and nail to either keep slavery alive, or keep their slaves around to abuse.
Imo, names don't matter until they matter. If people are offended by a name because that person literally defended the institution that kept your family enslaved for the half-century to come, that's perfectly justified. If South Asians in the UK wanted to remove Churchill's name off a school they went to because of his role in the famines in India, that'd also be perfectly fine.
Historical figures are literally that: figures. We choose how we remember them. George Washington isn't going anywhere just because he's not on your school's name.Atheris wrote:

There's enough uproar for the city to move and change the name, so I think that speaks volumes.
Cities don't just meet and play Where's Waldo to find racist-named schools to rename.

I mean, why not just name it after George Washington Carver at that point?
For the realists in the room, it's much cheaper to change the name by adding "Carver" on the existing one, than to make a whole new name and line of merchandise.Loeje wrote:Who is offended by Washington's name?
