Miners need to exist. This is off topic though.

Using the precedent that Chinatowns have been renamed Charlestowns..shall we also rename Washington? I tentatively lean towards no since Washington is not comparable to entities as brutal as Nazi Germany, Soviet Union or China.

Welcome to the Nekostan-e Gharbi. Our ancestors were a group of genetically enhanced Israeli cats raised by two Iranian Jewish women, Rachel Davidi and Esther Moshel. We are a constitutional monarchy where a line of benevolent and powerless feline queens “guide” the citizens or more precisely are the subject of their constant gossiping.

Current Queen: Sarah IV (House of Moshel)
Current Prime Minister: Dr. Elisheva Cohen (she is fine with Elizabeth for non-Hebrew speakers) from Likud

What about Muir woods? It's a National park, huge tourist draw and 15 minutes from SF.. Are they going to rename that as well? Remove the Unico monument since some of the 46 country rep's probably did something to offend modern sensibilities.

In fairness, the school board passed the initial resolution. The school board does not have the jurisdiction to address rampant crime, homelessness, and human waste in the streets. Those responsibilities would belong with the municipal government, which, while somewhat related to the school board in terms of structure and budgetary concerns, remains distinct from the school board as a governmental unit. Of course, one could argue that the school board has bigger fish to fry too, but multitasking is possible.

I think I'd simply argue for the existing narrative surrounding and system of values represented by Washington and other Founding Fathers as I did previously. It's not an unprincipled argument, though, no doubt, it will be contentious as all things are on NSG.

Okay, I was going to give them some credit before this. The governmental units in San Francisco need to get their act together. This is ridiculous on so many levels.

California needs to be renamed Catlifornia. That will solve a lot of problems the worst of which is that “California” is discriminatory towards cats.

Frankly, I feel like this would just make California even more cursed than it already is. Beyond that, the state government of California is not synonymous with the municipal government of San Francisco or San Francisco United School District's board.

Old buildings often get torn down and new one built for the same purpose.

Should a new building also be named after the same person, to make up for the gross dishonor of "de-naming" by demolition?

"Catlifornia" sounds more like "cattle" than "cat" ... at least to me.

There are a lot of towns named after an industry or resource that was there (usually now gone) but naming all of CA for an industry which is rather minor there ... would be barely less silly than naming it for an animal generally kept as a pet. It lacks grandeur either way.

CA is not the leading beef producer. (Texas, etc) Characterizing the state by it's 5th largest industry is suspect, but when the state is well down the list as well, it's complete rubbish.

CA may very well have the most pet cats, if that's anything to be proud of.

The obvious pronunciation of the made up "Catlifornia" only has a hard i if that's the last letter ("catli" as you said) and in such a long name used often would be almost unvoiced. In my opinion. And there's really no point arguing how people would pronounce a name which was made up half an hour ago. I'm for "cattlefornia" except in formal use.

i find it amusing that lincoln and sherman are on the list, i thought the confederacy was bad?
and it is, don't get me wrong; slavery is reprehensible and i'm not sad that it lost, but this is like the time that the federalist called aaron burr the true hero of hamilton. it's amusingly ironic that in an act to try to avoid causing offense to, let's be honest, white people too rich to have any actual problems in their lives, that they accidentally side with the confederate states.

I think it's probably a sign the subject is talked out. School districts can rename schools any time they want, but the SF board made a mess out of this one and their timing wasn't great either.

I don't remember anyone commenting on my idea that locally significant people, or only moderately famous people who were born in the area, should be preferred over nationally famous figures who never had anything in particular to do with ... the area where the building is.

Or that school boards should have nothing to do with renaming. I would allow the Principal to initiate renaming, and it would be decided from a list on which all parents and staff vote.
