I've spent enough time on the internet to know that a group of any significant size will eventually attract people who make racists, sexist, and homophobic posts as a guarantee. That such posts were really made by real people for me is not in doubt. That they would be the driving force behind what's happening would take more than just going "people are shitty on the internet."

In theory, but I don't see that happening regularly, the reality is that most of the finance sector players are all too much colluded, for the short selling to be outplayed consistently by other hedge funds, and to actually "balance the free market".
The financial "professionals" who could outplay the short sellers regularly, to the point of discouraging the practice, those who could, are too scared of reprisals. As they are not as anonymous or averagely mixed in the crowd as the retail investors.

If this short selling revenge is going to carry on, which is hard to say because GME favored from very specific conditions, this looks like mainly a retail investors playing field, with the other bigger investors tailing after them.

The investing logic and movement structure are also different, between retailers and institutional investors.
The retailers who are currently playing on gamestop, have a striking resemblance to the investors of cryptocurrency: many, medium/small, coordinated, focalized.
Which is different from the institutional financial speculators: few, big, individualistic, differentiated.

I don't think the institutional financial market could pull this kind of short selling reversals, as good and effectively. They are too worried about their own gains.
The retailers on reddit and other platforms are madmen, who some of them don't even care about gaining from their investments, when this all blows off they will still have their same old jobs, they know it, and they want to enjoy the moment until it lasts. Financial gains come second, for some of them. Which is their strenght, setting them apart from hedge funds and other institutional investors.

It's going to be a god damn blood bath. It is also going to be good in the medium term for a lot of retailers to inboard onto long term prospects as these hedge funds are forced to liquidate other assets to cover their idiotic short positions, and across the board prices will go down.

These guys are throwing actual good money after bad bets and many are going to get wrecked in the process.

Maybe, the fundamentals don't favor gamestop. They are dying a slow death. If you could take a short position on a 6 month contract without risking a margin call, it would be a reasonable bet. But those pesky calls can be very expensive when an option for 10,000 shares goes from 4.00 to 130.00 a share

Galloism wrote:Wall Street Journal dips their toe in on the "white supremacist investors" angle

First, there were the potential legal issues. As WallStreetBets grew, it faced accusations—often lodged by angry short sellers—of market manipulation. Moderators urged users not to make posts “for the purpose of instigating or coordinating a group effort to move the market for a security.” But that didn’t silence the community’s critics.

Then there was the hate speech. Last year, Mr. Rogozinski decided to do some housekeeping and scrub some of the more distasteful content being shared in the community. In an off-Reddit chat room associated with WallStreetBets, he found language rife with obscenity, racism and antigay views that moderators let stand.

“There were a handful of mods who were straight up white supremacists,” he said. As a Jewish man married to a Mexican woman, he found it impossible to stomach.

“I have really thick skin and people can say whatever they want to me, but at some point there’s a moral standpoint—like with my kids, I don’t want them to think, ‘Well, they can say whatever they want about you,’” he said.

Mr. Rogozinski wound up deleting the private chat room hosted on Discord where the offensive messages were exchanged. He also removed some of the moderators. The backlash was swift: Enough users chafed at his actions—along with his promoting a book based on WallStreetBets, as well as an esports-style trading competition under the WallStreetBets name—that he was booted out by other moderators. He hasn’t moderated the community since April.

Thank you Robinhood for restricting my purchase on Gamestop while my order order was in queue.

I have no idea whether it would still go through or not, but i cancelled regardless. Price took a nosedive thanks to brokerages restricting sales of volatile stocks

Oh, certainly I know that every group has them. From what I have been reading, however, is that it wasn't one or two people, but rather a series of brand new users spamming this nonsense incessantly. The wsb board has been getting a lot of obvious bots trying to kill support for this in other ways (1-day old profiles copy/pasting the same message about how the crash is coming and go to other stocks with poor grammar). It's not that it doesn't happen, but in the specific case there was a massive influx of new users posting the exact same message in the exact same way to specifically get around their automods. If it was just trolls being trolls, then it was at least a concerted effort.

$350/share currently.

I have no doubt Gamestop will come crashing down. But in the meantime, they need the shares to fulfill their shorts and nobody is selling. They got greedy and stupid by shorting the stock as far as they did. No sane person would look at a stock shorted as far as Gamestop was and figure it was anything but an fool's bet.
